Elliott was shit in Ottawa and only got good once he was playing with Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk in front of him in a Hitch system.

It's a funny thing about St. Louis: Canadians, historically, really like it there. Lots of guys retire there and stay. They seem to feel comfortable because it's a medium-sized town with friendly people where nothing really happens, like most of Canada, but with the added benefit of no one giving a shit who you are. Canadian players thrive on that because Canadian hockey players are secretly big whiny diaper babies. That won't be the case in Calgary, where there's not only a ton of attention on the Flames but a great deal of angst about goaltending being the difference between Gaudreau/Monahan/Bennett/Giordano/Brodie going to the second round of the playoffs and missing them altogether. So the answer to that question is a system goalie going to an uptempo team under high pressure? Oy. This is gonna be Bryzgalov with the Flyers all over again, another guy who can't make the transition from country club to fishbowl. Elliott is gonna suck so bad in Calgary, he's gonna flirt with out-of-the-NHL numbers and make us all incredulous that he singlehandedly knocked our guys out of the first round.

might've been true at some point, but Elliott face 254 shots over 7 games against the Blackhawks, 36 shots per game

and 197 over 7 games, 28 shots per game vs the Stars

stopping 31 of 33 shots in a game 7 vs the Blackhawks and 31 of 32 in a game 7 vs the Stars.

Elliott didn't have a great series against the Sharks. His teammates going 8 straight periods without scoring a goal and thus constantly playing from a deficit no doubt contributed to his woes in that series.

Murray for Pitt benefited from the Penguins shot-blocking efforts. Murray only faced 19 shots in the final game against the Sharks--and only 2 shots on goal in the 3rd period of that game. Overall, Murray only had to deal with
23 shots on goal per game in the playoffs.

This is true. They will regret getting rid of Fleury if they do. Right now they say they are keeping him.

Yeah, Elliott was great with the Blues this year. I am postulating that he will be much worse without them. Even saves don't occur in a vacuum; when he has to deal with being The Guy in a hockey hotbed, he could easily prove to be a mental midget. If Calgary were a place to flourish as a player, so many Canadians wouldn't rush to tell their agents it's on their no-trade list.

Oddly enough, Americans seem to do really well in Canadian markets: Blake Wheeler, Johnny Gaudreau, Max Pacioretty. Europeans, too. It's the locals who turn into a bunch of bitches. Jason Spezza demanded a trade out of Ottawa and to no other Canadian team.

Fleury, Bishop, JImmy Howard were the names floated going to Calgary before St Louis rushed in and offered up Elliott.

Now the Blues are talking about how they need to pick up a veteran, but starter quality goalkeep to pair with Jake Allen for another season or two?

Elliott only had a year left on his deal before becoming a UFA. If he does well in Calgary, he'll get a huge contract next off-season. If he flames out due to CH's concerns, he'll still be able to get the fuck out of cowtown.

watch st louis panic and trade for howard or one of the Dallas Stars 2 lesser versions of Howard.

Six-year contract for Andrew Shaw. Man, what the fuck ever. Love Shaw but he's not built to last.

Stan did the right thing letting Shaw walk. This salary cap situation sucks. It exists to prevent dynasties and to help the small market and southern cities where they dont give a shit about hockey..yet a handful of teams still win most of the stanley cups.

#Blackhawks sign Brandon Mashinter and Michal Rozsival to one-year contracts. And I'm sure Twitter will handle this well.

27 yr old Mshinter was a -7 last season, 4 goals in 41 games. Stats = Unimpressive. I remember him being on the ice but don't recall anything specific. Smell Test = Unimpressive. Cheap money on a below average player that could easily be replaced with a yoot that shows something. No big deal here.

Roszival. I've never seen anyone with limited minutes be such a liability. He's old, slow, and really bad. I'd much rather see a younger player out there who makes mistakes but can at least have a chance at covering those mistakes with speed and athleticism. this is a mistake. We can only hope he breaks his leg in the first week of the season.

I think there's value to a veteran roleplayer who provides organizational continuity and can mentor a fellow countryman/defenseman in Kempny. That value is right around the league minimum. Honestly, I could deal with Rozsival as a #8 defenseman who mostly serves as a de facto coach and drops in on a game or two here and there. Unfortunately, Quenneville loves his old guys, so Rozsival will play 50 to 60 games, keep young defensemen out of the lineup, and fall apart by March.

Bringing Mashinter back is totally indefensible. He doesn't belong in the NHL, full stop. Fortunately, at $575,000, you can stick him in Rockford where he belongs and not carry any dead cap space; God knows we have enough of it already. Should not be here. And you know what, fuck Andrew Desjardins, ship him out too.

I agree on Mashinter, but on Jay Zawaski's podcast he said his sources told him, Kane and Toews like having him there for his toughness. Sounded like an enforcer type.

Desjardin is serviceable.
That is exactly my point on Roszival. Q will play him...almost every younger defenseman is an equal or better option and Long term I'd rather get those younger guys on the ice.

I think it is important to make a judgement after FA. Perhaps Rosi was signed to be the 7th D-Man and a very cheap cap option. I read Campbell is signing for $1.5mill, so:

Keith
Seabs
Hammer
TVR
Kempny
Campbell
Rosi

Perhaps they will use the rest of the money to sign a couple guys?

Pretty sure he wants to be here, and will be here, if he truly is taking a discount.

I remember the story of how Toews and Kane told Stan they needed "a Dan Carcillo type" in the dressing room, so Stan went out and brought back the actual Dan Carcillo. That one ended up working out, but at least Carcillo always had a higher ceiling than Mashinter (though damned if he ever came close to touching it on his second time around), and you can get how Carcillo, for better or worse, can get his teammates properly worked up. Same with Shaw. Mashinter is just a plug and a bad one.

Blackhawks place David Runblad on buyout waivers today

**Doesn't seem right as I thought the period for that (help CH?) ended yesterday. It would seem this is a mutual contract termination.

Isn't that more dead cap space this year and next than if they loaned him? Something like $300,000 in 2016-17 and 2017-18 versus $100,000 this year and $0 next.

EDIT: strike that, it's not an ordinary-course buyout, it's a mutual termination. He's just gone, no hit.

The #Blackhawks agree to terms with Spencer Abbott on a 1-year contract. The forward had 14 goals and 21 assists with Frolunda in 2015-16.
