I have also contributed off season thoughts in the hockey section this year.

I am filling the void from not posting in the Cubs section.

My kid was playing soccer the other day and I had to ask a dad what constituted off sides in soccer. He was nicer than I would have been if a father asked me the same question at a football game

Are there any other sports I should be looking into?

Just wait until you hear my thoughts on Olympic sports

this whole "extra time" concept seems to be ripe for corruption

Really? I'm shocked.

Seriously, go google "Fergie time"

Quote:
It has also been suggested that Ferguson's intimidation of referees results in so-called "Fergie Time": that is, unusually generous injury time being added in matches where Manchester United are behind. The phrase is at least as old as 2004,[224] and a statistical analysis by The Times suggests that this comment might be valid, though the article points out that other footballing criteria may explain the correlation between extra added time and United being behind.[225] Analysis by Opta Sports of Premier League matches played between 2010 and 2012 found on average that 79 seconds more time was played in matches where Manchester United were losing.[226] This was a greater figure than for other top clubs, although most of these clubs seem to benefit from a "Fergie Time" effect, particularly in their home matches.[226]

Poland has a good soccer tradition. Couple of third place finishes in the World Cup. The 1974 team is probably one of the better teams to not win a World Cup. The '74 Poles were a fast team that were undone by a bad pitch in the semifinal against, of course, West Germany. It had rained before the match and Poland wanted it postponed but the referee (quite naturally an Austrian) refused.

I can't believe Iceland and all those British Isles teams made the final 16. Lots of people think England have a cakewalk with Iceland. I could see England completely destroying them like 6-0 and also losing 1-0 or in penalty kicks. England have the talent to easily win but also have that pants-shitting quality to their play.

and here's some site's list of the top 10 fergie time goals (edit = these and all the top-5/10 clickbaity list articles seem to be any big manutd goals in stoppage time and seemingly NOT just goals that occurred after the ST "should have" ended. i guess some ppl generalize "fergie time" to be all of ST but really it's like when the tying/winning goal comes in at 95:43 of a "+5" game =)

Poland can beat Portugal.

Wales-Northern Ireland was some of the worst football so far in the tournament.

I'm not sure how this France/Ireland match is only 2-1. I can't remember the last time Ireland was in the offensive zone.

I know France are the favorites, but almost every damn tournament we hear about how Italy is down and out and bam, there they are in the semis at least. I don't bet against Gigi!

That being said, Iceland should not be overlooked.

Both Gigi and the Icelanders onto the next round!

 England

I love it. Woy wesigned even though his contract was up after the tournament anyway. They deserve their humiliation. Uninspired turgid dogshit play from the world's most overrated and overpaid players. Ian Darke and McManaman were apoplectic as the match wore on. I like Woy's master tactic of waiting until the 85th minute for the Rashford substitution.

dolphin aside, i hope Poland beats Portugal.

Hopefully in the last minute of stoppage time or after Ronaldo misses a penalty kick.

Might be tough sledding for Poland today. Ronaldo looks to have found his groove.

I still have France, Germany, and Belgium as bets to win. Belgium/Germany would be a fun final. But I suspect it will be Portugal and Germany.

Props to the Welsh.

I can't believe anybody saw them going this deep in the tournament.

Yeah, maybe, but they have had a favorable path. They were in a shit group and then drew Northern Ireland in the Round of 16. Wales was in the same group as Belgium for qualifying and beat them once and drew the other match. I would not be stunned to see them in the final. I wouldn't rate Portugal as having more talent than Belgium.

Germany-Italy tomorrow boys!

man we can talk about a "tactics masterclass" going on in the first half of italy vs germany, however i'm not worried about that as i'm breaking out in hives from going upwards of 45-50+ mins without bon jovi crooning about "THAT'S THE POWER TO TURN BACK TIME!!!" in a fit of #CommercialWithdrawal.

seriously TPTB, how can you expect me to continue to function at even a decent level when i might go a whole hour without my fix of bon jovi wailing about what happens when you turn back time? THAT IS THE POWER OF TURNING BACK TIME!!!!!

also check out this amazing picture of ozil putting in work in the first half:

seriously, he makes some kind of amazing faces when he's on the ball, doesn't he? it seriously looks like he's in the middle of a DP sandwich with 2-3 chicks and only one mesut.... that's the kind of strained face that you can only achieve on the path to GLORY!

Coming down to penalties.

Too close to call.

Both Gigi and Schweinstieger never let the boys down.
