I hate to be that guy... but a 4-5 pounder is wall-mount material. The equivalent of a 360 yard drive. I'll need to confirm once I receive GPS coordinates.

I haven't the slightest fucking idea, but it was on par with some big largemouths I've caught. Can't you just let me have my moment?

That's it. Our fish-off is on.

Also, if you fly to Canada to catch a 4-lb smallie, you're doing it wrong.

This fishing thread is exhausting. I'm heading over to Hockey Gay's sitting thread.

Great night tonight. I went down to a very shallow portion of the Dupage and was thinking this wasn't gonna work well... next thing I know, my texas-rigged worm is getting destroyed every time it hits the water. I caught a few rock bass and then finally after a couple hours... it hit... HARD. I was using light tackle, but I knew this was a huge smallie. It took me a good five minutes to land it... was probably a 4 or 5 pound smallie... wow, what a fight! I'm hooked on rivers, man. I will be buying some waders this weekend.

Did. Not. Happen.

This is true. I think Leash just over estimated do to the fact that a smallmouth may be the best fight of all freshwater fish.

I agree. Largemouth get all the glory but I'll take fighting a smally any day of the week.

So... having never really targeted smallies or fished many rivers got me curious...

For those of you who fish often, did you grow up fishing? If so, where and with who? Rivers or lakes? What types of fish did you target? What species have you never targeted but would like to?

LM just get the glory because you can catch them anywhere.

Pond fishing with my dad for sunfish when I was little. Once I got older we throw a couple lines out there at the bottom to snag catfish and then cast around looking for bass. We took trips to AR to visit family and we would do a lot of fishing there. Largemouth, smallmouth, striper....

One thing I never did was muskie, walleye or northern fishing. I always wanted to try it but my dad had no interest and I sort of fell out of fishing once I hit my 20s. It's sad because I loved to go...

Lived next to a creek as a yute. Used to fish it all the time.

Just lost interest and haven't picked it up since.

In all seriousness, I do believe this was close to 4 pounds based on experience with largemouths, but I don't doubt that I was also excited and the fight made it seemed larger. 3 is probably more accurate. It was a big bass.

Same for me. I used to go fishing all the time with my father. Some of our cousins had a cabin on the Tippecanoe River and we would fish there quite often.

I haven't fished much since my dad died in the 90s. I would love to go more now, but I just do not have much extra time.

Highly recommend adding Florida backwaters fishing to the bucket lists. Catching a shark or a tarpon is a very memorable and, in case of a shark, a tasty experience.

walleye fishing for me was born of time spent with my dad in the fall. when we would normally go to bed, dad would get us up and we'd drive down to the mississippi. downtown. we'd hike across this bridge onto an island and hike across the island, to emerge at a power dam that was all lit up with safety lights. all the way across. you needed no flashlights. you could see really well. the river would be boiling and we would just cast jigs and twister tails. we would catch 1 or 2 saugers/walleyes a night. we'd fish till 1 or 2 in the morning. we brought a little wind up radio and would listen to coast to coast am.

as i grew into my teens i pretty much only targeted bass and crappies and my dad stopped going as well.

fast forward to 2004 and i'm 2 years into being married and a career man doing almost 0 fishing and one of my coworkers was taking the day off because the flw walleye was on our pools of the miss and it was the championship. he and i tooled around watching these guys fish this spot i grew up fishing and the wave of memories just hit me. i've been a walleye fanatic every since.

Bittersweet night, man.

I caught a 21" largemouth at the local lake. However, I lost my phone at the same time. All-in-all, I'd say it was worth it. I didn't weigh it, but according to charts, it was at least five pounds. Based on experience, I'd say that is accurate.

I just began publishing a fishing podcast for the American Sportfishing Association called "WeFishASA."
Four shows are available and the guests include Babe Winkelman, Kevin VanDam and Mike Iaconelli.
They are available at www.wefishasa.com
Please feel free to let me know what you think.
Thanks

That seems weird. Sorry to hear it. I would always go to the outdoor shows and see my resort hosts over the winter before the season.

well i know they had bad luck. the boiler and water pump systems that fed heat and water to the cabins went out 2 and 3 years respectively after they bought the resort. 30k bill. they never recovered. they put it on the market last year and when a buyer fell off, they had to give it back to the bank.

we are taking a year off and have a few other resorts as a possibility for next year.
