Rockford fodder, but you gotta fill roster spots there with Hartman, Motte, and probably Kero coming up. I didn't expect any big moves today other than Brian Campbell and that's what we got.

Looks like Campbell's contract is structured with bonuses to keep the base down for this year ($1.5MM) in exchange for some dead cap space on likely overages next year (~$750,000). This is what Going For It looks like when you have ~$18MM tied up in underachievers and the Canadian economy goes to shit.

EDIT: forget "likely" overages, the bonus is for dressing for ten measly games! This is basically cap circumvention and I approve.

Kris Versteeg is still out there...

drafted by Boston
Chicago
Toronto
Philadelphia
Florida
Chicago II
Carolina
Los Angeles
Chicago III?

I think he'll wind up in Denver, though.

The Campbell deal is a good one. Still need one more and I'm not sure who gets to be #4

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today they have agreed to terms with forward Jordin Tootoo on a one-year contract.

Tootoo, 33, has played the last two seasons with the New Jersey Devils where he scored four goals and notched five assists in 66 games during the 2015-16 campaign. Over his 12-year NHL career, Tootoo has tallied 158 points (63G, 95A) in 673 career games. The forward made his NHL debut in 2003 with Nashville where he played for eight seasons. He later skated for Detroit (2012-14).

The Churchill, Manitoba native has appeared in 40 Stanley Cup Playoffs games, netting three goals and recording seven assists. Tootoo was originally selected in the fourth round (98th overall) of the 2001 NHL Draft by Nashville.

There is your Carcillo type, maybe he'll get to wear "22"

some Canadian guy, from Alberta, lives down in Dallas now, whose job it is to run extended personal errands for pro athletes (like drive a Ferrari from Dallas to LA or to BFE Canada for the summer) or just to hang out with the Canadian players and make them feel like they're back home, told me a story about Tootoo threatening to kick Dirk Nowitzki's ass at some Dallas club after Dirk put out his cigarette in errand/drinking-buddy dude's drink. Dirk backed off, walked out of the club and left his goons behind (couple of guys in Nowitzki's entourage supposed to look out for Dirk, I guess). Tootoo looking out for his fellow Canuck.

There's no reason for this.

No, no, this is a terrible signing. Drunken coked-up Eskimo who was briefly kicked out of the league to go dry out. Not what we need at all. Just awful.

What's up with his multi-color, guy from the Soup "flo"? Shaw going grey or gay?

I think you can do a few things:

1. Role out 1 great line and put Hammer on 1 line and Soupy on the other.
2. Role out 2 great lines, and suck up the 3rd pairing.
3. Role out 2 great lines, and alternate the 3rd pairing with a guy from each top line.

From a guy who went undrafted in one and maybe two entry drafts, to trying to make the league as an undersized pest, to becoming a key player on 2 SC winning original 6 teams and now signing a big time long term contract to play for the most historic team in the league. Not to mention getting to spend his career wearing the two best sweaters in sports. I'd say Mr. Shaw has had an amazing career so far, could probably make a disney movie out of it if you wanted to (well, maybe not the gay slur part).

it's a great sweater, but I hate seeing it on HIM. Sucks to lose him, but something had to give.

Buffalo trades for Jimmy Vesey's rights, so we're probably not getting him in free agency after all. That's a bit of a loss for the Hawks.

Ducks trade Andersen to the Leafs, he signs for five more years. Looks like it's all John Gibson from here, plus some other goalie since Anaheim craps out goalies.

Sounds like Yandle is heading to the Panthers, which means Campbell is gone and might come here.

Any chance the Hawks can get Vesey, still? Sounds like he doesn't want any part of Buffalo since he is saying he won't sign before he is a FA.

Oh, in case you missed it, Kris Versteeg is out of the league, gonna spend the year padding his stats in Switzerland so some go-nowhere club like the Avs or the Vegas team gives him more money than he's worth.

I read that Bowman has been following Vesey all around watching him play and Hawks are on the short list.

Sort of old news. I know they went through the buyout procedure earlier in the month (after the buyout period had elapsed), maybe it's just now final that he's off the books. At any rate, every little bit helps. The funny thing is Rundblad is gonna tear up Europe after looking lost without a map in North America.

Not sure how they did it, but the Coyotes waived and bought out Antoine Vermette, which means he's getting $1.25MM this year and next to do nothing. I'd love to give him a full year in Chicago if he's willing to play for cheap with his free Phoenix money and can cope with playing for a contender.

I would love this, but it only takes 1 team to pay him like 3-4mill a year.

Bury Tootoo and put that money toward Vermette. Hawks got pantsed by the Beej, of all teams, snagging little Sam Gagner for $650,000. Let's grab some talent for the bottom six.

Coyotes have over $13MM more in cap charges than they do in real salary. Remarkable. The anti-Hawks.

Agreed, but I thought I read Keith and another guy lobbied for the Hawks to sign him. I have no fucking clue why Stan did not sign Gagner. I would rather have Vermette than Kruger.

So, before I start getting ready for the bandwagon, can someone tell me whether this team is a cup contender still or not?

IMO they still have about a 3-4 year window.

The West looks like it's a little less deadly. The Sharks can't repeat what they did, the Ducks are running out of whacks at the pinata and just hired an idiot to coach them, Minnesota is fundamentally flawed, the Flames/Oilers/Jets aren't there yet, the Avs never will be. The Kings and Blues took steps back, the book is out on the Stars, and once woke hockey fans stop jacking off over Black Hockey Jesus, it's hard to ignore that the Perds have a fast-declining goalie to worry about. Of course, the Hawks got worse, too, but at least they're following the flow of traffic. They're at the "get hot at the right time and you never know" level, which is fine enough, I guess. Their days of dominance are over forever.

Top 3 for Vesey reportedly Blackhawks, Rangers, and Devils.
