I thought you got RSTLNE for free (those being the most commonly occurring consonants and most commonly occurring vowel) and then picked three consonants and a vowel, right? Hasn't it always been this way? I mean, I guess in theory they could use a puzzle that doesn't have RSTLNE anywhere in it, but any puzzle that didn't have those six letters would probably have to be so limited that you'd get it off the four you picked.

The puzzles normally avoid a lot of those letters. Also everyone used to do cdma or bcda so they stopped using those so much. Now the contestants mix it up more with p and h and f because screw merv griffins greedy kids.

If you watch a few you'll see that's not true. There are definitely easier and harder puzzles based upon the automatic letters.

The assigned letters was introduced much later.
