Rick, stop talking about North. That's what he wants.

I guess the online version of the SunTimes didn't think Rick was good enough to include today. No surprise though.

It was a good win but I'll crack wise even when my team is bad.

Heres the column I believe. This is not on the sun times website as someone above noted.

Radio host should know newspaper columns are meant to last

January 14, 2008
Sometimes you gotta laugh, take solace in what a philosopher once said: ''The difference between intelligence and stupidity is that intelligence has limits.''

You don't have to be a genius to see that Mr. Spittle, a learning-deprived-and-proud-of-it morning sports-talk radio host in Chicago, is knuckle-dragging his way toward that allegedly unreachable bottom.

He and his ace staff of ''researchers'' recently ''discovered'' that I wrote a column a year ago announcing that I voted for flagrant and admitted drug abusers Jose Canseco and Ken Caminiti (dead of a drug overdose), as well as Tony Gwynn, Goose Gossage, Cal Ripken Jr. and Andre Dawson, on my 2007 Hall of Fame ballot.

My ballot was photocopied next to my column for viewing, for those who can't read, I suppose.

The reason I voted for Canseco and Caminiti, as I described in my column of Dec. 22, 2006, was as a protest against baseball's lax handling of the performance-enhancing drug mess that has been building for years and years.

Baseball allowed the Steroid Era?

Then own its darkest kings.

As I wrote then: ''Ken Caminiti and Jose Canseco ... have as much chance of being elected as Snoop Dogg has of being the first civilian astronaut. (Indeed, they didn't even make this year's ballot.)

''I know they will get few votes -- maybe none, other than mine. But to me they represent more than the game. ... They represent the Steroid Era.

''If I were a child ... I would want to learn about these men. I would want to know.''

Such subtleties of protest and learning naturally eluded Mr. Spittle and his flying-monkey brigade.

The cackling host acted as though he had caught me in some kind of scandal, something that made my non-vote this year fraudulent.

Hmm.

It's hard to know the logic of a half-filled brain.

But here's a tip for the clueless little fellow: Columnists write columns so they can be printed.

So they last.

Try to remember that.

It may be hard.

But you can get it tattooed on your scabby knuckles if it helps.

Last thought on Mr. Spittle.

If ignorance truly is bliss, the guy is in heaven.

As much as people like to pile on Pappy, Rick Telander is actually TOTALLY in the wrong here.

He's talking out both ends in two columns about a year apart.

I guess Jay Mariotti's windsocking is rubbing off on him.

But the more he generates column inches for Mike North, the more North 'wins' this controversy.

last thing I want to do is defend North, but Telander is a moron...and he makes North look good. Of course North plays it up like he is uncovering the secret identity of "Deep Throat" (insert your own jokes here)...but in this case Mike is right & "T-Bag" Telander is way off base.

Telender is the biggest piece of shit going in the Chicago media today.I've had an issue with this douchebag ever since he lined up 6 shots of Tequila in front of Bob Probert (who is a recovering alcoholic) and challenged him not to drink the shots just to show Rick he has recovered...

Telander is so fucken stupid and above it all to realise you are never cured from any addictions. .Many, as in Probert's case struggle with it on a daily basis and with Rick's NU education you would think he would understand it. If Rick is so noble and wants to cure the world of steroids, addictions, underage drinking and what ever he feels he's above in his articles, he should stop for a second and do a little research and talk to people before you make yourself look like a bigger prick than you already are.

Rick's a quitter and threw a few guys under the bus over at the Score during his radio stint and after a day or two of listening to his radio show he did Chicago a favor of going back and hiding behind his pen.

I wonder why the Suntimes didn't include this online yesterday? Telander was on Kaplan's show Friday night and sounded like the pompous prick he is. This is the most ANYONE has ever talked about what this putz has written, hopefully, he's one of the cuts at the Suntimes. Just another self important loser.

Sure, if that's what you think. Obviously, North is going to run with this because he sees this as a controversy to boost his ratings, and to prove that he is still relevent. I think Mike is a douchebag because he's lost interest in sports, and he's said so on many occasions. I think he got way too comfortable, and it showed.

He is a pompous prick. I think he believes that he's above everyone else, and he's another guy who's tired of sports, and, thus, blesses us all with global warming columns that display his lack of knowledge, and his pompous attitude.

while i agree that both of these guys are douchebags, the fact is i dont see how you can find Rick in the wrong in this specific case.

first, he writes a silly column regarding his mailing in of a blank HOF ballet. not a big deal. maybe a bad column, but not worth anything other than discussion on whether or not that was the correct thing to do...

Mike then calls Andre Dawson and tells him that Rick thinks he is on steroids...totally misrepresenting what Rick wrote. ridiculous. if i was Rick, i would be pissed off too.

Mike was in the wrong there.

then Rick calls Mully and Handley to pretty much explain what he wrote and says what anybody with a brain (and most of this board) has been saying for years...that Mike North is a simple-minded idiot.

sure, i think Rick is a jerkoff, but he is correct. Mike is an idiot.

then Mike spends the next day bragging about how he did some "research" and found out that Rick voted for Canseco and Caminiti (doesnt mention that he also voted for Dawson, Gossage, etc.) - completely retarded, as his "doing research" meant going back and reading an old column that is readily available for anybody to find online, and of course, he made it seem like he had guys digging through old garbage bins, hacking into email accounts, decyphering weird transmissions from the suntimes office to some super sattelite in the sky...

Rick points out how silly it was for mike to, for one, brag about about "doing research" when his columns are available online for anybody to read and that secondly, again the point of his column/decision regarding HOF voting (this being the vote from a year ago) was totally lost on Mike, as all he saw was "Rick voted for Canseco!" and therefore assumed that this meant that Rick thought Jose Canseco was HOF worthy...

again, Mike is in the wrong.

like i said, i think they're both idiots - but god, this really shows how dumb mike is.

Overall I'm with you on this thrillho. I do want to make a small correction. Telander didn't submit his blank ballot (and said so in the column). By
not sending it in he didn't increase(however small) the calculation of 75% of ballots needed for election or the 5% of ballots needed to stay on the ballot next year.

he he

He seemed to put a lot of times into naming the other score hosts in mr. spittle world. dan bernstein and terry boers = ben einstein and jerry lords. Wonder if that ben einstein was really a subtle smack at danny for disagreeing with mike.

So in other words, he was too lazy to fill it out and/or return it. His whole column is about nothing.

My Dear Friends,
Teleander deserves to lose his ballot if he does not wish to use it.
No on gives a rat ass about his "protest". He is a lazy bastard that deserves death. You too Sid.

ok. my mistake! hah.

i thought he submitted it blank, but yeah...i'm wrong. he just didnt send it in.

but yeah, doesnt really make any difference from my point of view. he did something, then explained himself and that portion of it is totally up for debate by the media/fans, etc. but the whole telling Andre Dawson "Rick Telander thinks you're on roids" thing is where this all got fucked up.

Actually he did hurt anyone who he would have otherwise voted for (such as Andre dawson) and potentially helped those he would have excluded (by reducing the overall number of votes).

It was a poorly-constructed argument by both parties. Rick needed to realize that what he was taking part in was a privilege. In both cases, he just threw away his votes.
Not surprisingly, Mike cherry picks the columns and makes claims that aren't substantiated.
Both are just trying to drum up some business.

Telander the last two years has made "statements" with his Hall of Fame vote.

If baseball disgusts you, then please remove yourself from the voting process.

It's not like his protests are going to influence baseball in any away. It's for his own ego.
