Hearing that Hales is suspending operations and won't open in 2016-17. That's too bad.

Catholic High Schools are dying in the Chicago area. Desales and Leo are also both on life support.

Marist was in the same situation. They went Co-Ed and they are now thriving.

Not really. Marist was never down to a few hundred. They were just smart enough to go coed to make sure it was still hard to get into.

Marist killed Mt. Assisi, Maria, dented McAuley and has put Queen of Peace on life support..

Hales has been struggling for decades, and it's probably better that they are closed. The education wasn't very good. Many kids who couldn't cut it at Carmel or Rita went here, and that should tell you something, since Carmel and Rita don't ask too much of their lower level kids (though they can get a great education if they so desire).

Leo is hanging in there. I subbed there a few times. Good kids. The smartest kids there do not match up against the smartest kids elsewhere, but whatever--they're doing good work there. If I had money, I'd donate.

Many other schools are thriving, but with changed numbers. Mount Carmel had 1100 boys in '88; now they have about 700. But, like the other schools, they've adjusted.

What kills me is that the working-class kids who went to Carmel, Laurence, and so forth can no longer attend, since the tuition is outrageously expensive. You can't caddy in the summer and save for your tuition any longer. Shame. Such schools are reaching out all over the area for students; you have kids from the North suburbs going to Mount Carmel.

So some of these schools are thriving, but they're a little different. I guess that's how the world works.

Right. Marist was doing fine but got much stronger with the addition of girls.

What has helped Mt. Carmel and hurt schools like St. Laurence is alums send their kids to Mt. Carmel if they chose the Catholic high school option. St. Laurence alums tend to send their kids to Marist or Rice if they go catholic.

St. Laurence has tried to tap into the middle/upper middle class black city worker families the last few years and they seem to have stabilized. Something Mt. Carmel has done for decades.

Yeah, Carmel's been able to get such kids since I've been there. Hell, their baseball team last year (which blew the state championship game) was largely black. The students often were the kids of local politicians (Meeks, some alderman) and other notables (Simeon's former basketball coach, Bob Hambric, sent his son there). Good for Laurence.

Sam Puckett from Hales Franciscan was the best high school basketball player I ever saw.
Maybe this should be a new thread.

Ah, sorry, Doug--I meant Mount Carmel. I did interview at Carmel once, but, as I live a few blocks from Evergreen Park, it was a tad too far.....
