Bears lose starting center Hroniss Grasu to torn ACL

When Bears center Hroniss Grasu went down with a knee injury on Saturday, coach John Fox said it looked “fairly serious.” It turned out to be about as serious as a knee injury gets.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that an MRI confirmed Grasu suffered a torn ACL.

That’s a major blow at a position where the Bears are lacking depth. Two veterans who could have filled in at the position were Matt Slauson and Manny Ramirez, but the Bears cut Slauson in May and he signed with the Chargers, and then Ramirez retired in June.

The Bears took Grasu in the third round of last year’s draft. He started eight games as a rookie and was slated to start this year, but it now appears the Bears will have to turn to backup Ted Larsen.

Grasu went down without being touched at an open practice the Bears had at Soldier Field. The playing surface at Soldier Field has often been criticized, and this summer it has taken a lot of wear and tear with soccer and concerts. It is never possible to say for sure whether poor field conditions caused any particular injury, but this injury may cause more scrutiny on the field in Chicago.

knee injury will offer convienent cover. i recall last year he received critical acclaim at first then he was overpowered... the media narrative was all over the place on him

While I don't wish anyone to be hurt, this might have been the best thing to happen to the OL this pre-season.

Rather see a vet at center making the line calls than a 2nd year player who didn't really impress his first year.

They say Larson is a vicious player. That's good. Kreutz was vicious and look how he turned out.
