Great example. I miss Lonnie at the piano bar!

The guy North called out on the day after thanksgiving owned that several times and owns it now.

I go there for a big new year's day party with a cast of characters from the headlines and women of questionable virtue.

It's probably weird, but small towns with hotels like that make me nostalgic.

Our "big" family vacation every year usually consisted of going to Busch Stadium for a Cubs-Cards series. We would pile into the Buick Skylark and head South. We would always stay at a hotel on the way down and a hotel on the way back when we were younger to make the drives shorter. The hotel on the way down was always my favorite part of the trip. My dad, who calls them "motels", would always wait and pick some low end, smoke-filled "motel" with a blaring "HBO" sign out front. Every once in awhile, we would get lucky and get a pool, so the smell of chlorine brings back nostalgia, too. And we would ALWAYS order pizza and have it delivered, which is something we couldn't get in the small town I grew up in. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Those were the days, man.

Seven or eight years ago, some buddies and I drove down to Southern IL and fished every big lake on the way back. The last lake we hit was Lake Clinton. We were tired of camping at that point and went to a hotel in Clinton that was the epitome of a low rent 80's "motel." It even had a greasy spoon Greek diner connected that was owned by the same guy. It took us like 30 minutes to even get the attention of the hotel attendant. The price was something crazy - like 30 or 40 bucks a night. And it even advertised HBO outside!

Fritzy is around. His regular hangouts are Player's OTB and Psistaria. I'm sure he misses Lucky Magee's and Myron & Phil's as much as I do.

One of his relatives coached my son's team this year. There must be hundreds of Konstantelos' running around the north side of Chicago.

You have named many places in whose demise I played a role.

I'm beginning to think leash calls every sit down restaurant a "Greek diner." He has named about 50 but as far as I know outside of Greektown...they are appear only sporadically.

I guess that is Galesburg for ya.

Maybe he is referring to places like Christy's?

http://www.christyspancakehouse.com/

Having a gyro platter on the menu doesn't make it a Greek diner.

That is a Greek diner though. My partner's Greek buddy from high school owns that place.

I wouldn't even say that a Greek diner has to be run by Greeks. It's just a style of restaurant. A coffee shop really. Menu has omelets and other egg dishes, open faced turkey, beef, and ham with gravy and mashed potatoes, and burger and other sandwiches that are offered "deluxe", i.e. with a cup of soup.

Greek diners are an entirely different animal.

Their demise in the Loop is really sad. Those used to be the places you could find city workers grabbing a cheap lunch or breakfast. A few of them had dive bars in the basement from which you could hide from polite society during the day

There's still the one there on the corner across from City Hall. Not 312, I think that's a little more pretentious. That's where Rahm eats. The other one.

My parents like ishnala by the dells. I think it's on the cover of some supper club book they have. Stacey's used to be Ina's in Bellwood but they liked it better when it was Ina's. Would the rusty pelican be considered one?

On the SW side we called the places "family restaurants". They were usually almost only open, served basically everything all day and were owned mostly by Greek families.

I wouldn't call Cardozo's a Greek diner. It's kind of it's own thing. Fuckin' cool.

I've never been in there. I'd say "diner" and "Greek coffee shop" are pretty interchangeable, but I wouldn't call anyplace without a counter "a diner".

No, I just actively seek out Greek diners.

If they're owned by Greeks, have a Greek section of the menu, and you come out greasy, I consider it a Greek diner.

I can confirm the presence of a counter with accompanying counter seating for approximately eight individuals.

I'm feeling like ass otherwise this thread would have convinced me to go there today.

Instead, I'm going to head home to watch the Cubs.

JORR gets it. Most diners are Greek, in my experience, and most are actually run by Greeks. I think I'm jumping ship to Gen X.

They haven't yet made an offer to acquire you. You're still under Millennial club control for four more years. And you're not eligible for arbitration until 2017.

Right, yeah, and there's always the old owner asking if everything is okay with your food I mean pleading just be honest and he'll make sure your food is all right, and then his son is walking around yelling at people in the back.

Also, there is usually a card clipped inside the menu with a list of daily specials that can be ordered "a la carte" (with soup or salad, choice of potato, vegetable, and bread basket) or as a "complete dinner" (with tomato juice or soup, salad or cottage cheese, choice of potato, vegetable, bread basket, and dessert).

Yeah man...those are just diners dude.

Or "family restaurants." I've seen that term associated with some of the local diners as well.

Like Wag's. I miss Wag's. It probably sucked...but I was a kid and pancakes / syrup did the trick.

The South Side needs a lot of things....but it does need more Greek-style (if that's what they're called) diners.
