New show from Netflix.

Horror/Sci-Fi/Mystery show about a kid who goes missing.

Through 4 episodes and it is pretty damn good.

Finished it up.

Nothing revolutionary, but a damn fine series.

I wonder what they'll do for season 2.

i'm halfway through.

winona is really overdoing it at times. she's never been that great of an actress outside of her work with tim burton.

i love the kids. they're a little more precocious than kids in '83 were but it reminds me of the good parts of "super 8". i hope the conclusion isn't as banal and bankrupt.

much of the casting is very well done; nancy looks perfect as an early 80's girl, likewise her friend barb. the only one that looks completely out of place is her BF. he looks like an absolute doofus. kids would be making fun of him for trying to look like elvis.

the pace is good so far, and the intrigue is high. but i'm just hoping the ending isn't as predictable as it seems.

also, one of the best opening credit sequences in TV show history. it's like a cross between a TV Stephen King book ad from the 80's and a john carpenter movie.

The opening credit font is literally the same as Stephen King's Needful Things.

it's stephen king's font throughout his books in the 80's i think. that has to be on purpose.

i have 2 episodes left. i've probably watched the opening credit sequence 300 times.

i enjoyed watching steve get his face beaten in by jonathan.

sometimes i hate these binge series. it's like reading a book everyone else has finished. at least on a weekly show everyone can talk about it at the same pace.

The opening is awesome. So 80's John Carpenter. Perfect

Great show too.

Agreed on all counts. Perfect show to waste some time with, and has something for everyone in the house.

Like demon monsters. Kids really love those.

I'm about half through and I'm enjoying it immensely. I love the cheesy Carpenter horror films.

Finished this Sunday. Same thoughts as everyone else, great show, lots of fun.

hoping they do a season 2, but wondering where they can go from here.

I don't know where season 2 goes... I was hoping they would make it like AHS and have a new story each season. I feel like the well is dry on this one.

the anthology miniseries thing is getting stale. they can definitely squeeze more out of these characters for another season. but i don't know if it could go beyond that. creating a new story and new characters would have me much less interested.

I disagree. I like being able to sit down and give something a couple of episodes and not feel bad if I need to bail. I stuck with Mad Men for a season longer than I wanted and finally bailed with the finish line in sight. That's a shitty feeling to know you wasted all that time and never got the payoff. I did the same thing with Sons of Anarchy.

Agreed.

There is still story to be mined out of these characters.

Really? What's left?

Hopper is about the only thing that holds any interest anymore.

Brenner is dead right? The upside down didn't look to hold many secrets. Full of monsters and asbestos...

whereas sucker punch makes MKULTRA superpowers sexy and adventurous this seems to make 'em nostalgic for a spielbergian view of the 80s. c'est la vie!

the parallel with the beloved preppie girl giving it up to the asshole guy reminds me of the sledgehammer-to-the-face message of "even if you do everything 'right' you can still get caught up in the end" just like the mom in requiem for a bad movie about heroin.

ah well who am i to rock the boat? despite all my rage i'm still just a rat in a cage! * rocks out with dual devil-horns and one eye open [HINT: it ain't the ones right next to my nose =] *

(the link up there is to a SOLID article on some of the symbolism in the show)

Just finished the 4th episode. Zack is right about Rider, she's single handedly keeping this from being a pretty good show, Imo.

I did the exact same thing with Mad Men and Sons, although at least with Sons I only got a couple seasons in before saying no more. Think I quit during their vacation in Ireland. Mad Men, I still have the final 5 episides on my DVR.

well here's the best question (that most likely will be where this story goes): what if the monster is actually a former test subject? and eleven is the "form" before what happens to the creature we see in the "upside down"?

Just finsihed this last night. Overall, pretty good. Tense and keeps your interested.

Spoilers:

Thought they wasted Matthew Modine's character unless he didn't actually die in the school. He was a super intriguing mad scientist figure that they never dove more into. Actually, the entire lab outside of doing weapons test in Cold War era USA could have used more light shone on it. Maybe that's part of the season 2 storyline.
