So, what now? Is he calling for the end of the NFL because people get injured?

No, there's really no argument to it. It's just "guys get hurt, life's a bitch, I took high school physics."

sorry, didn't link to the entire thing:

http://sports.cbslocal.com/2016/08/31/r ... -injuries/

what the hell:

And even as we consume every last morsel of all things NFL during the whole calendar year, gorging ourselves at Roger Goodell’s trough of television, gambling and merchandising, nothing can be done to keep the sheer physics from eroding the quality of the actual product. When all is said and done, these machines of bone, muscle and cartilage can only be so elastic before they must be replaced.

The Thursday night fiasco is some of the saddest evidence of what’s at work here, particularly after the first weeks of play have inflicted many car-accidents worth of damage around the league. We tune in by the many millions to watch under-recovered athletes slog into each other, dragging themselves back to the huddle time and again, like farm oxen yoked to a plow.

you can also find the above freshman comp essay by googling "inexorable meat grinder"...at least until some Swedish metal band gaks it for their name.

Dan won't have to wonder too much longer, because as goes the NFL so he goes. Unlike Howard Cosell, he doesn't have anything else upon which to attach an impramtur upon.

I heard the NFL is shutting down after this year.

Except he labeled force a function of velocity, which it isn't, it's a function of changing velocity. Also, forces aren't "transferred", they are vectors that are applied, which results in a transfer of total energy in the form of momentum. This is Day 1 Newtonian Mechanics stuff Bernstein is getting wrong. Stick to sports!

to combine with UFC. the kick off will be replaced by the placekickers for each side entering an octagon cage suspended above mid-field for the right to possess the ball. extra points will be the kickers squaring off and the scoring team getting 1 free shot at the other team's kicker; if you knock the other guy down, you get the point.

Getting too close to the quarterback on the pass rush, however, will still be a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty.

I liked the XFL's 10 yard scramble for a neutral football to determine opening possession.

Well, but then Dan has always struggled with momentum, hasn't he?

Blazing Saddles is pretty overrated IMO.

I saw it once and never felt compelled to revisit it. It was OK.

I'm with you on that. I always thought Young Frankenstein was a better movie. However, I will never forget the first time I saw the Spanish Inquisition part of History of the World part 1 - I don't think I had laughed that hard in my 14 years of life up to that point.

I have a hard time believing that Social Media Dan™ (not real-life Dan) would not find Blazing Saddles...problematic.

After watching both back to back this weekend, to be honest, I feel like Blazing Saddles was better...

The problems with a lot of Mel Brooks' movies were a) too topical, and b) too many passe joo jokes - especially by the time Spaceballs came out.

The great thing about Young Frankenstein is that it was not nearly as topical as many of his movies, and it still has a timeless quality to it. Blazing Saddles, although a classic, satirized things that were a hot topic in the '70s, and seemed edgy at the time, but is considered old and tame now. HOTWpt.1, Spaceballs, etc., were very topical/joo-ey and hold up even worse (plus, IMO, Spaceballs was Brooks trying to do a Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker "Airplane!"-style movie, and failing miserably).

I saw High Anxiety for the first time last night. I didn't think it was funny. I still like Blazing Saddles and History of the World, but this one wasn't good. Madelyn Kahn looked a tad Reese Witherspoon-y in it, though.

They are good movies but the humor has Catskills feel to it. Also, if you are going to retroactively condemn revenge of the nerds you cannot let this get a pass. Sure you can say the racial humor is social commentary but the rape humor isn't

Having our pre-Blazing-Saddles talk now. About 1974, the n-word, the f-word (the other one), sociopolitical satire and how comedy matters.
8:46 PM - 4 Sep 2016

Well, Danny boy is finally having that REALLY IMPORTANT talk with his son about the N-WORD.

Dan: Jason, we don't use that word in public. Especially around black people. But we can use it in the privacy of our own home and around our close friends and family. Got it?

Jason: Yes, Dad.

I hope it went as well as Dr Ken's talks with his kids. How can he still find this funny after evolving? Or does he need to evolve some more?
