I'm gonna say Marion Marauder is no more than 3/5 in there. Winter Harbor is probably the fourth choice behind Brooklyn Hill and Waitlifter K.

Yeah this Saturday is kind of light...you got the Arlington-Washington Futurity G3 at Arlington, a Kentucky Turf Cup G3 at KY Downs, and Super Derby G3 at Louisiana Downs. No G1's or G2's I can see.

Thanks. The Super Derby G3 at Louisiana Downs might be worthwhile. As probables, they are showing Sharp Azteca, Dalmore, Mo Tom and Texas Chrome.

well, this is kinda disappointing...Winter Harbor is only 6-1 odds for the race. you're pretty much dead on about Marauder. 4-5 as of this morning.

1 - Blenheim 5-1
2 - Waitlifter K - 9-2
3 - Winter Harbor 6-1
4 - Brooklyn Hill 8-1
5 - Merchandiser 15-1
6 - Marion Marauder 4-5
7 - Tony Soprano 12-1

Equibase numbers like Tone for some reason...i dunno. i guess complex bets are the only way to go here...

Marion Marauder is a great horse, but they weren't trying to win with Winter Harbor. Jamieson just let him trot home easy without chasing him. He'll be on "GO" next week. I'm still not sure he can beat Marion Marauder or Southwind Frank right now, but Alagna will have him set up for Lexington.

Yeah, Bar Hopping was large last night. I wondered why Tetrick wasn't down to drive Winter Harbor, but I guess Alagna wanted to get a driver set up for both weeks and Tetrick was committed to Takter's horse. He may have made a good choice.

The thing about Winter Harbor is, he was a quarter million dollar yearling and one of the best horses sold at auction in 2014 based on his pedigree and physical looks. When I was buying horses I was happy if I could get one for $40,000, make a hundred grand racing him at 2 and 3 and then sell him for $100,000. These guys that have Winter Harbor aren't in the business to do that. They're buying at the very top end and looking to hit a home run every time. They bought this horse as a potential stallion prospect. For him to be viable they need to win a classic race. The Canadian Trotting Classic goes for a lot of money and I'm sure they want to take it down if possible, but I think they're really shooting for the Kentucky Futurity. He wins there and he's a stallion. Everyone in the business in in Lexington for the sales and races. They can make him there. You can see that's what Alagna and Myron are aiming for. Whether they can pull it off is another story. But Marion Marauder supposedly won't be in Lexington.

That's a tough question. Most of the horses I've owned have been pacers. Pacers are preferred by the betting public because they are less likely to break stride. There's nothing worse than watching a horse you just bet break into a dead run leaving the gate. But there's nothing as gorgeous as a perfectly gaited trotter. The top class trotter is the king of racehorses. He is the descendant of the American road horse. Thoroughbred horses are one-trick ponies. They exist solely for the amusement of the wealthy. The standardbred is a utilitarian animal. He can plow your field during the week, race two heats on Saturday, and take the family to church on Sunday.

There's a town in upstate New York called Goshen that is known as "the cradle of the trotter". Young guys began racing their horses on Main Street in the mid-1800s. Eventually it became so dangerous that they built a racetrack. It's still there and now called Historic Track.

In 1849 Hambletonian was born up the road in Sugar Loaf. Every single harness horse racing today is descended from him.

I'd have to say I hold trotters in higher regard than pacers. Training a pacer is like driving a Hyundai. Training a trotter is like driving a nuclear submarine. Anyone with a set of hopples and a refrigerator full of drugs can train a champion pacer. It takes real horsemanship to train a trotter.

cool. i had a feeling you'd answer it that way. when i was looking up the difference it seemed like trotters are the fine wine, and pacers are cheap beer or a shot of jager.

while watching the actual race i can't tell the difference...but i like watching both.

I'd say that's a good analogy. Back in the 1800s when all the rich swells in New York were competing to buy the best trotters, hillbillies in Tennessee and Indiana drover pacers. A nickname for hopples is "Indiana pants". If you had a trotter you couldn't get trotting an old time horseman might say, "Well, you can always put the pants on him."

One easy way to tell the difference between a pacer and a trotter is that trotters usually don't wear any straps (hopples) around their legs. But in the 70s or 80s an Australian guy named Ken Shand invented a trotting hopple that has become popular. The first horse of any account that I can remember wearing them was a freakishly fast filly named CR Kay Suzie. It was very controversial at the time. The purists were appalled by hopples on a trotter. That is, until they had an expensive horse of their own that they couldn't get to stay trotting any other way. Now you see them all the time. The Europeans still disdain them and I'm pretty sure they are banned over there. The rules regarding equipment and medication are much more stringent in Europe. In fact, geldings aren't even allowed in some classic races over there.

Europeans take their trotting very seriously. I was out at the Meadowlands racing a couple of my good horses in some big races back in 2001. There was a Breeder's Crown race for older trotters on the card and a horse that many consider the greatest trotter ever, Varenne, had shipped in from Italy. He absolutely crushed the best horses in America. After the race all these Guidos in $3000 Italian suits began running around the track apron waving Italian flags. My partners and I were cracking up. Then they began playing this song in French over the PA. The horse had his own fucking theme song!
