She will probably be fired. I would be surprised if anything else happened.

That can't happen.

It just can't.

You serious?

At most she gets a couple years. If her and the victim switched clothes/uniforms he would be serving life and guys like shirtless driver would be demanding his death.

Shooting was justified. She was just defending herself.

What if one of those things is true, though?

Pretty shitty question to ask after the chief himself said that the victim was unarmed, but still, what if it is true?

There is a precedent for not knowing if you have a gun or taser.

That's why I believe that she won't serve jail time. No one can really prove that one of those things isn't true. Obviously you can argue he had his hands up or question why it took 10 officers for a motorist asking for help. Either way I think she has a defense that keeps her out of prison.

She doesn't need a defense. She has a job that keeps her out of prison.

I'm a cop, he's not. That's all the story you need in this country. We can go back to Rick's unanswered question about serving five years if need be.

Yeah, that is built-in, that defense. (Can't find this article that makes a similar point....Time magazine a few months ago?)

Why the hell did she have her weapon trained on the guy?

^yep, it's not hard for a lawyer to make that argument and the court system is about what you can prove and requires intent. You can get negligent homicide, but not much else to stick

I am confused as to how the whole situation unfolded.

Why were there 3-4 police cars and damn police helicopter involved!?
Why was he walked back to his truck?

I don't get that either. For a broken down car?

The story goes that the police were en route to another call when they came upon Crutcher's broken down car.

The whole thing is insane.

Even moreso than usual.

Well that makes sense. On way to a call stop that and shoot a guy. Sheesh.

I thought I read someone called and reported a car in the middle of the road. I'm curious how the helicopter was able to determine he was a bad dude and probably on something that high up in the air.

1000% This

As the helicopter cop is saying that, Crutcher is calmly walking back to his SUV with his hands up.

The only remotely positive thing you can say about this scenario is that the Chief is publicly supporting the family to some degree and they aren't in full denial mode.

Why was the helicopter there?
Why was he walking back to his truck with his hands in the air? Was he asked to stop and refused to? Did he reach in his car or reach for something when he was asked not too? I've yet to see any of the videos that show anything that could answer that? There's quite a bit more to it then he's black and they have guns so they killed him.

I want this to be true but early returns seem to disagree with your premise.

Disobeying a police officer's even lawful orders is not a death sentence, nor is reaching into one's car against the order of a police officer, nor does such action place the officer in reasonable fear of their life.

Am I out of bounds here to think if this guy were white the cops would have called him a tow truck, and helped push the SUV off to the side of the road?

I dunno, maybe/probably. This is the cute thing to say on Twitter that everyone will enjoy because they desperately want this to only be a racial issue, but it isn't. There are plenty of videos online of otherwise passive white people being harassed and maimed by police officers. Hell, in that shooting of the black special ed teacher in Miami awhile ago, the cops said they were trying to shoot at the ostensibly white autistic guy holding a toy train.

It's not only a racial issue for me. Police competency across the country is just as big a problem.
