watching Bar Rescue....recon spy orders a harvey wallbanger
bartender chick doesn't know how to make it
guy acts incredulous and like a prick (of course)

now, i'm going to make a short list of what i'd consider "standard" cocktails- ones that if you couldn't make or screwed up, i'd understand the customer being pissed
martini, old fashioned, gin & tonic, screwdriver, margarita, cosmo, maybe tequila sunrise
i'm sure i'm missing a few

but other than those, do you guys actually ever order anything like a harvey wallbanger ? or a roy rogers ? or a singapore sling ?

just curious how often bartenders, in general, have to make these type of drinks

I'm pretty straight forward with my drinks so I won't be able to help too much on the unusual. I mostly drink beer, and my cocktails consist of G&T, old fashioneds, Jack and coke and specialty twists on cocktails (like those found at Girl and the Goat, Vera, Siena, etc.).

Bartenders love me.

Japanese slipper.

Midori, triple sec and lemon juice equal parts shaken with ice. Delicious, fruity and kinda weird. Looks like ectoplasm

Technically, a cocktail has three or more ingredients. Something like Jack & Coke is more properly called a highball, Scotch & soda being the original highball.

My basic cocktail is a Rob Roy, which is really just a Scotch Manhattan. If I'm at one of these modern "cocktail bars", I'll usually try to find something that is Scotch-based. Sometimes that can be hard to find. Blood & Sand is an old time Scotch cocktail. Cody at Ward Eight makes a good one. Three Dots and A Dash used to have something called Tall As a Tree and Twice As Shady when Paul McGee was there. I was recently at Aviary and had a cocktail that was really just a super high end Rob Roy. My wife had this:

I like a greyhound with a lime twist or old fashioneds.

My mom's drink is the Rob Roy. Either dry or not and gets a lemon twist.

I think there used to be more formal rules about this shit. I can remember my old man, who regularly drank Glenlivet (or Tullamore Dew if it was available) and water, complaining about having to drink a Rob Roy at a cocktail party because ordering a highball at such an event would be considered gauche. Apparently those rules went out of fashion around the time people began flying on planes in their underwear.

Correct. A fifth of that on the golf course led to a fun/bad bachelor party experience for a buddy of mine.

Walkers & Water always gets screwed up for some reason.

Drink of choice for Dr. Ken Sr.

JORR, did you grow up on scotch? It tastes terrible to me, though I'd drink it in a pinch. Bourbon tastes like ambrosia to me, but maybe it's just what I'm used to. Also, I don't hate America.

Wikipedia would seem to agree with chas ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakebite_(drink) ... "A snakebite is an alcoholic drink made with equal parts of lager and cider." That said, odd drinks have odd names in odd places on odd occasions.

Yeah, I think it's an acquired taste. A Scotch and soda is crisp and clean. I can drink Bourbon and water in a pinch, but I don't really care for the nutty flavor. I don't hate America either, but I like German cars, Italian suits, French wine, Scotch whisky, and Greek women.
