That speaks to just how bad tanking seasons really is. And I realize that the Cubs have been successful doing so and fans of other teams and many media members consider this "the right way". I don't want my team tanking a season. At least not from day one.

That's kind of become a narrative among Sox fans, as if a 1994 championship was fait accompli. I remember being scared of Cleveland. And the Expos had a really good team. We'll never know. But I didn't dare dream of a World Series in 1994. Hell, in 2005 I didn't think they were gonna win until Blum hit the homer in the fourteenth.

yeah i think MANY believed it would've been expos/sox in the world series. would've been great to watch.

That's really the motivation for the argument isn't it? Even when tanking works, a lot of sports fans are weary of watching their team attempt it. So basically, this is a rehash of a 4 or 5 year old complaint? Sounds like sour grapes to me.

How does "sour grapes" apply? I don't want my team tanking. It worked here. It's not working as well in other places. There are no guarantees.

And a lot of people act like it's really easy. Tank a few seasons and win "multiple championships". That ignores actual history. The Yankees have 27 titles. The Cardinals have 11. The A's have nine and the Red Sox and Giants have eight apiece. That's in the entire history of the game. The Dodgers have six and no one else has more than five. That's in the entire history of the game. But I'm sure the team that hasn't won in 108 seasons will suddenly win four times in the next ten years.

My wife took all advanced classes and AP classes throughout high school and got straight As with the exception of a single B. Her high school didn't give weighted grades for higher level classes. In my high school an AP A was worth 4.25 or maybe even 4.50 and a regular A was worth 4.00. At her school both As were worth 4.00. She got beat out as valedictorian by a kid who got straight As in remedial courses. Worse yet, another guy from the dummy brigade also beat her out by percentage points so she didn't even get to sit on the stage. She's still sore about it to this day and will bring it up every once in awhile.

Our system was that honors and APs were worth an extra .5 but only up to four times. We had eight class periods, so you can figure out where this is going: kids gaming the system by taking seven hours and a study hall to divide the points by seven instead of eight. Made a lot of performing-arts kids mad as fuck. Not me; my GPA was never above a 3.5.

There seems to be this idea that the Cubs are set up to win many championships. I'm just showing you numbers that illustrate how unlikely that is for any team not wearing Yankee pinstripes.

What is going to make you happy? One? A bunch of division titles?

I'm fine with one championship and not a hell of a lot else thereafter. Someone mentioned not wanting to be remembered in the same vein as the Carolina Hurricanes that won one Stanley Cup and then couldn't make a 16/30 playoff for nine of the next ten years, and I get that. But that won't happen. It's the Chicago Cubs! The Cubs winning the World Series would be a momentous occasion. Would it be nice for this to be the beginning of a dynasty like the Hawks had? Sure, but let's not pretend a 103-win world champion would be written off as a fluky one-off after a few subsequent good-not-great seasons. LOOK AT THE GODDAMN 1985 BEARS.

I guess that's my point. If a single World Series win is "fluky", then most of them for teams not based in the Bronx are fluky.

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I would be disappointed if the Cubs didn't win one World Series in this window. If they can get that one title, then I'll reevaluate my expectations.

The extent of trolling by JoRR and Dolphin is LoL funny.

No you're not. Or, you won't be if they win one and then do not get close for, let's say, eleven years. That one championship fix don't last long, trust me.

So back in 1985 the Bears won the superbowl and the world celebrated ...then the space shuttle disaster happened.

In 2016 ...the Cubs will win the world series...the world will celebrate....then the presidential election will happen.

Again, most teams have five or less in 120 years of baseball. One every fifteen years is pretty good unless you're the Yankees.

I'm 46. The Sox have won it once. That sucks. To use your numbers, it sucks times three.

Speaking for myself, I will be pissed if the Cubs don't win it this year. They very rarely make the playoffs two years in a row so you gotta get while the gettings good.

Get it while you're healthy....I think the '83 Sox and the '84 Cubs looked forward to more playoff appearances...didn't happen.

Oh I thought the 85 Cubs were going to run away with it. Then every starter got hurt and that took care of that.

This is an absolutely amazing post, given the thoughts of Sock fans over the past few days...

Joe Orr Road Rod wrote:
I actually agree with Hank. The Cubs have had a successful season already. Of course the Cub fan will be disappointed if they don't win the World Series, but this has been a great season. The idea that there is one champion and 29 equal losers is relatively new (and also promoted tirelessly on the Score). But if you agree with such bullshit, you have to brace yourself for the very real possibility that the Cubs are very likely to be "equal" to the Sox this season. See how dumb that is?

It would be great if the venomous Sock fans could explain why they disagree with this position (because everything they post absolutely disagrees with this sentiment).

Unless Theo's Cubs win two...maybe three pennants, I would say its a big failure if they do not win a World Series.

i don't think it is. theo was brought in to do one thing: win a championship. that has to get done, at least once, during his tenure.

Oh, wow... I thought it was World Series win or bust. So, how many pennants do we need to declare it a "success"?

What are you talking about? You have already declared this a success because the Cubs should be good next year. Doesn't really matter what happens over the next 4 weeks.

I don't know how it works in baseball but tanking to me sounds like a really bad team says they are wiping a slate clean. Blow it all up start over. While you are right it may not work, I think it would be better than floundering in what ever you are doing or continuing to suck. Even when you are tanking a season are you building at the same time? I guess if the Bears said we are going to suck for 4 seasons but here is what we are trying, I'd be on board. If it doesn't work you aren't really worse off. If it does work you have a chance to win and be competitive for a bit.
