I got a new car about a month ago and Sirius is free for a couple months. I thought no thanks I'm not paying for radio but I frickin love it. Is it a novelty that will wear off or is it worth paying for?

It is worth it, but trying have more than 2 cars with it. You start asking, why am I paying so much per month? I have 3 with it.

Unless you are a trucker or do a lot of long distance driving, it is a total waste of money.

Funny you started this. My Sirius app isn't working at all this morning.

And it's not a waste of money. I have a short drive to work, but I have the app on constantly at work and at home.

When you go through the few presets of local channels, and it is the same 3 songs played with let's make prank calls, Sirius is worth it.

I pay for Sirius but I am a chump. Outlaw Country (60) is probably my favorite channel, although it's still not that great. I also listen to the Loft (30), the various "alternative" stations (35, 36), Little Steven's Underground Garage (21, keep in mind there is little "underground" or "garage"-inspired about the playlist), First Wave (33, 80s New Wave/early "alternative"), Hair Metal, and Bluegrass.

In general all of these stations kind of suck, but they are still vastly superior to the sonic atrocity that is terrestrial radio.

I love it, but I bought two lifetime subscriptions for $800 back in December of 2005. I doubt that I would pay month to month to have it, especially now that I no longer listen to Howard Stern.

Just get a free pandora account, start a 90's station, and connect to your bluetooth.

I get the most mileage out of Shade 45, Pearl Jam (#22), BackSpin (#43), and the Fantasy Sports station. Bonus points were being able to listen to Redskins/Giants when I drove back from St. Louis a couple weeks ago.

You are that way anyway. It's not so much that the songs are good (they are) but they remind me of people and my youth. I haven't gotten to the country or hair stuff yet.

If your car can take signal from your phone (via Bluetooth or USB), it might be better to buy a Spotify subscription. Then you can stream any song you want, plus repeat, skip, etc. And they now have similar "radio" stations to Sirius (such as Decades of 50s, 60s, 70s, and so on) if you're in the mood for random song selection within a specific genre. Or you can do a Pandora-style stream, where you pick an artist such as Pink Floyd and it will play artists similar to Pink Floyd. I've discovered many great artists by listening to "Dream Theater Radio" or "Queen Radio."

Just keep in mind the streaming will add to your data usage.

That might work. I'm not a huge fan of the phone being connected to the car though. It's been a pain in the ass.

I felt the same way at first. Still going strong after a few years with it. I find myself listening to the comedy channels quite a bit. It sucks for sports play-by-play though. Yes, you can get any team's call, but it's so delayed that it's almost annoying to listen to.

Sirius is tremendous, absolutely tremendous.

Like nearly every subscription when it's time to renew you threaten to cancel and then have them offer you an introductory rate to retain your business.

Radio is essentially stuck to Channel 53. My commute is only around 20 minutes.

But when I drove to Toronto a couple weeks ago the comedy stations were gooooold.

I pay around $8 a month for now.

EDIT - Pay ~$4 bucks. 21.74 for 5 months.

There country stations are pretty SOLID.

Bluegrass Junction, Outlaw Junction and Willie's Roadhouse are good stuff.

Y2K Country plays exactly what they say. The Highway suuuuuuucks but that's not their fault. Current mainstream country is a poor product.


I dig the new station No Shoes Radio (Kenny Chesney type country). Plays a lot of live and beach type country music. A guilty pleasure.

Outlaw is a great station, mainly because it is so diverse, and I'm not much of a country guy.

Underground Garage may be my favorite music station, though - a lot of great tunes from some little-known artists.

I'm almost never in the car so we don't have it but just think about how many hours a month of listening you waste listening to commercials and then decide if the price per month is worth it for that.

Sirius has commercials.

Even if you count the ones they do as commercials it is still far less than normal radio.

If you are referring to the sports channels and stuff which are just broadcasting the same feed you get over radio then you are right though your point is mostly useless.

It seems like there are a lot of channels that are good in concept but pretty bad in practice. Take the Elvis channel for instance. You would think there would be enough Elvis hits to get you through a good part of the day. Unfortunately, you get the bizarre Elvis fans who want to spend the entire time playing his deep tracks. They also never try to get the type of interviews that allow you to see the bizarre side of Elvis, which is much more interesting than his public life.

E Street radio is the same. Concert after concert of unintelligible Springsteen dialogue.

Even if you use it for cross country trips, the stations seem to repeat themselves every five or so hours.

I guess I don't spend that much time in the car because my commute is usually pretty well filled with NPR/Mully and Hanley in the morning and a mix of shows/music on the way home. I have Sirius in the other car and it just doesn't seem very compelling.
