WBBM-AM headlined "JON Stewart has been found dead in a San Diego hotel" but it turned out to be JOHN Stewart - couldn't they have been more careful?
SAN DIEGO -- John Stewart, a singer-songwriter whose roots stretched back to the golden era of folk music through the California rock scene of the '60s and '70s, suffered a massive stroke at a San Diego hotel and died Sunday.
"John Stewart leaves a compilation of musical excellence unparalleled in its time," wrote his Kingston Trio band mate Tom Delisle, on the band's Web site Sunday.
A member of "The Kingston Trio," Stewart struck out on his own in the 1960s and recorded 45 albums. His 1979 top-five song, "Gold" and its album "Bombs Away Dream Babies" were recorded with members of Fleetwood Mac.
Stewart was born in San Diego in 1939, and started playing at local schools in a rock band called "Johnny Stewart and the Furies" but college moved Stewart into the folk music area, and in 1961 he replaced founding member Dave Guard in the Kingston Trio. His low voice was heard on such top-40 hits as "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" but he left the trio in the mid-'60s.
Stewart turned to songwriting and solo work, and wrote the number one-hit "Daydream Believer" for The Monkees.
"California Bloodlines," his 1969 solo album, was named one of the 200 best rock records ever by Rolling Stone. John Stewart was 68.
