Football is specifically designed for television. It's supposed to get better ratings.

I will never understand why you think watching something on TV doesn't "count" for popularity. I also don't understand why it matters to you which is more popular. You like baseball more. Who cares if everyone else does?

It's no commitment to watch something on TV. And that's the entire basis of football's supposed popularity. If a better TV show is on some of those "fans" will watch that instead. And it's not so much that I care but rather that the truth is obvious. People like planning a fall Sunday around Bears on TV. They're emotionally attached to the Cubs.
Just admit you are trolling especially with the last two sentences.

People are clearly emotionally attached to the Bears.

The baseball fan changes the channel when his team sucks too. See Cub fans 2010-2014. See current White Sox fans also.

Compile enough anecdotes and it's data. Hank Scorpio is nervous. jimmypasta is anxious. Do they even know the Bears played last night?

The baseball fan's experience and participation isn't centered around the boob tube. It's in his heart.

Hank doesn't seem nervous. He even started a new thread saying how he will still feel good about the team if they lose!

I'm with JORR on this one.

For all of his numerous faults that cannot possibly be quantified.... he is a passionate baseball fan and that is to be respected. That passion simply does not exist with NFL. I think NHL is the only sport that approaches MLB in that way...and that still isn't even very close.

Ask random folks wearing Bears jerseys "What is your favorite part about gameday?"

"Tailgaiting!" "Inviting friends over!" "Making guacamole!" "Fantasy!"

No one is going to mention watching a running back surgically proceed through an A gap. 90% won't know what the A gap even refers to.

Baseball fans know all of the nuances of the game...everyone knows the legends of Kirk Gibson, George Brett and Babe Ruth.

NFL has the immaculate reception. And maybe you consider T.O.'s endzone antics. About it. Maybe there were other amazing moments but everyone missed it going back to the cooler to grab some more Bud Lights.

He almost pulled it off until he got the part about T.O.

It may be time to start questioning IMU's football knowledge otherwise.

As good a time as any to mention 'Fuck Kirk Gibson'.

Also, baseball is considerably better than football ... or any other sport, really.

JORR isn't schooling anyone. All he's done in this argument is use his own definition of the word "fan" and "popular" and continually move the goal posts on which sport is more popular.

Right now, I personally like baseball more, but football is undisputedly more popular.

They don't realize even JORR isn't taking himself seriously. I mean, just take a look at the arguments in this thread

College football is ten times better than the NFL anyway.

This is true. The NFL has become pretty much unwatchable for me. I used to enjoy it much more 20 years ago. They have ruined a great game what with the stupid rule changes and challenges. Meh.

Senor used to get an eye-poking boner talking about ratings for bad football crushing ratings for good baseball/hockey.

indeed he did, but keep in mind that i'm pretty sure that today i heard him brandish the term "zeitgeist" to describe the "cubbie thing" going on right now so you figure that's going to negate the general rule of thumb that "even shitty NFL games will beat good [postseason?] baseball games in the ratings"

once the cubs rattle off 2-3 championships i'm sure the novelty will wear off and we can resume our NFL ratings hegemony, you know, the way god intended it. Seriously, it's kind of amazing that such a top-tier classy franchise like the Bears couldn't do a little better even with a "Cubbie Zeitgeist" going on, eh?

CH i know you've long been a fan of the bears organ-I-zation and you believe that they've totally 100% earned all of the goodwill and !!! that they get [by default?] =P --- i guess we'll just say this ratings thing is a one-time anomaly cuz of the whole "It's Gonna Happen" thing aka "DAS ZEITGEIST!!!!" (i'm fighting off the urge to do another portmanteau like #CubGeist or something)

In Chicago.

I'm not sure this is even that impressive.

It is impressive. All we've heard is that nothing can beat football in the ratings. Obviously, it's taken a lot to do it, but the Bears finally have to take the backseat they've long since earned. Frankly, I'm surprised the game even got a 12 here.

Bears win the ratings war on Thursday night if they were 5-1 as opposed to 1-5.

I'm not sure if you're serious, but the popularity of football doesn't need compiled anecdotes. It has actual data to support its reign as most popular.
