Only three guys on that list are Sox fans and none of them are aggressive. In fact, they are/were always finding the negative in the Sox while seeking the positive in the Cubs.

Fred, Mully, and Hood? I know you're stingy with which professed Sox fans actually are Sox fans, but isn't "always finding the negative in the Sox" the truest expression of your people's love?

Yeah. The other guys are all Cub fans. I mean, here's the thing. A person can say whatever he wants. But when you spend that many hours discussing sports, your real emotions are tough to disguise. (I don't really understand why one would want to disguise them, but in the cases of these guys it's obvious they have.)

There's a marked difference in the way guys like North, bernstein, and Mac talk about the two teams. They're professing to be fans of the White Sox, but they talk about the Cubs in a way that makes it clear that they have deep emotions connected to that team. No Sox fan would ever say something like, "The Sox won their World Series, now I hope the Cubs get theirs", which is something "Sox fan" Mac actually said. I think with the Theo era in full bloom it's become absolutely evident that I was correct about bernstein all along. He was just waiting for them to cease being embarrassing to come out of the closet. The Cubs "saved Terry's life." And North? I've heard him jizz in his pants over Billy and Ernie while mocking the statue of Minnie Minoso as if Minoso was Adolfo Phillips or something. Does that really sound like something a Sox fan would do?

As far as the negativity being a Sox fan trait, I agree that it is. All you have to do is log on to the Facebook group "White Sox Pride and Passion" to see it in all its glory. If the Sox had this Cub team, Mully (and many other Sox fans) would be talking about how Schwarber, Baez, and Russell are all .245 hitters and that just isn't good enough. On the other hand, the Cub fan is just as hopeful when he has Jeff Pico and Mike Harkey as he is when he has Bryant and Lester. (That may change now.) And that creates a problem in how the teams are covered. Hanley will find the good in the worst Cub team while Mully finds the bad in the best Sox team. It is what it is. Sox fans are just as responsible for that as anyone. But when it all adds up, you have a huge imbalance in the way the teams are viewed, especially by people who are only half paying attention.

It raises the question, why are the Cubs the more popular team? Obviously not due to any on field success. I know the easy answer is that the Sox went to UHF while the Cubs ended up alone on the "superstation". But that's over a full generation ago. These guys moving to Chicago from Sheboygan and Des Moines after graduating from Big Ten schools didn't become Cub fans because "they got home from third grade at 3:00 and turned the game on." That's a Chicago story and probably apocryphal more often than not anyway. These guys become Cub fans upon arrival. And the media plays a part in driving that. People in the media don't live in Oak Lawn or Palos or even in Bridgeport. A college kid doesn't graduate from Michigan, get a job downtown, and look for an apartment in South Shore or McKinley Park.

There's a definite class issue to be explored here. The Cubs are the team of privilege. My friend took his kid who is a lifelong Cub fan but also a Wisconsin public school teacher and real SJW to Game 5 of the World Series. The kid was disgusted by all the wealth in the park. (He didn't tell his dad to take a poor kid instead though.) I'm not blaming any individual for that. I know plenty of people who paid four figures for tickets and one who paid five. I don't consider them bad people beyond their allegiance to the Cubs. But when you look around at what's happening not far away, you have to admit that it's really obscene.

Surprised all the suburban Cub fans could get the courage to come downtown given all the murders and black people in Chicago that frighten them.

Your point is noted. Agreed on your assessment of how WSOX began. It's quick and easy and I use both when discussing the team, station calling the game and fan base. In short, the acronym evolved for me. It did not for you and I certainly appreciate your stance.

I always laugh when I hear JORR go on his rant about the radio guys not really being Sox fans. As if he is the judge of who is a Sox fan and who isn't.

He says no Sox fan would ever say "The Sox won their World Series, now I hope the Cubs get theirs." Yet Sox fans on this very board have said that.

After reading so much of JORR over the years it is clear that he is really a Cubbie at heart.
