It's not really related but this reminded me of a funny story nonetheless. I was a partner in a construction company that specialized in room additions. One of my partners wanted to put an addition on his own house. The way we designed the thing to fit on his property it was going to be about a foot into the setback so we needed a variance. We applied and had to go before the town zoning board in his shitty suburb. His next door neighbor on the side where we wanted to build into the setback was a real asswipe. He showed up at the meeting and whined that my partner's kids would be able to look into his bedroom. The zoning board asked my partner what he planned to do if the variance was denied. He said, "I'm still going to build my addition but I will redesign it it to be as massive and obnoxious as possible under the code just to piss this guy off." The zoning board denied the variance and we built this huge structure on the back of my partner's house. No sun ever gets near his neighbor's windows on that side.

Setbacks are required to limit development (gross floor area ratio) on a lot. The distances from the property lines are somewhat based on aesthetics representative of the neighboring properties. Some are hard numbers, some are average of adjacent neighbors, some are average of the entire block.

I applied for a variance for another project out in Cary that was going to go a little into the setback. I went down to the village hall or whatever it is, it looks like it's in a barn or something. I talked to the honcho in charge of zoning and he told me he could get it on the calendar for the zoning meeting next month since I had already missed this month's meeting. That was about 50 days away and it was going to kill half the summer. I was bracing to tell the bad news to the client. But when I got back to the office I had a message from this guy that said if I brought a check for whatever the amount was for the variance, he would approve it that afternoon without the zoning process. I figured they must be hard up for cash in Cary and I ran right over with the check before someone changed their mind.

Okay, so I drove by this today. Panther is completely in the right here. His neighbors are the douche bags. It doesn't look that bad. Currently, it's parked next to the garage and pretty much the same height. You can only see if it you're on the opposite side (dead end) of the house anyway. It's not exactly a nice neighborhood, as is, so stop blaming this guy for your shitty house prices.
