For him and everyone besides a select couple at the score it is laziness really. It is easier for them to dismiss hockey in a joking, mocking way rather than invest in the sport. That sounds like a good comp then. Not Taj's fault they didn't win shit, but the general idea was to find a home grown talented role player who has generally been underappreciated but played a vital role for a long time on good teams and was always consistent year in and year out.
