Back in my high school days, I had a part-time job at the long-since-demolished grocery store on the Northeast corner (Avenue Food Mart). The owner and his son were a couple of bastards, I almost thought they had Nazi connections. I started in the deli and sometimes worked alongside the butchers...talk about some characters. I remember when one of them bought a new Buick Riviera that had a remote alarm that would alert you if the car was being tampered with or moved (a pretty fancy gizmo for the early 80's). Some of the other butchers would randomly slip out and push down on the car to trigger the signal, and it was hilarious to watch the guy drop everything (even in the middle of cutting meat for a customer) and sprint outside when his buzzer went off.
Nazis and the Outfit back in the day...man the old neighborhood has really gone downhill.
Yeah, the Old Man Kattner would sometimes have me do odd jobs, such as wash his black Cadillac, or go to his house and rake leaves...he had this huge mansion in Elmwood Park that looked like it belonged in The Godfather.
When he died, the son sold the land to St. Paul Federal (which basically made it a parking lot) and tried to expand by buying an old Jewel (I think on Belmont) and it was pretty much a disaster. By that time, I had moved on to college.
