Man this isn't even a fair question. I like being forced to narrow my favorite characters down to 10 tho. Just to be clear, I haven't watched the Wire, Six Feet Under, or Deadwood. I got into the Sopranos late, so I'm not gonna rate any characters where I haven't seen all, or nearly every available season.

1. Walter White (Breaking Bad)
2. Vic Mackey (The Shield)
3. Rust Cohle (True Detective)
4. Fox Mulder (X-Files)
5. Kenny Powers (Eastbound & Down)
6. Vanessa Ives (Penny Dreadful)
7. Castiel (Supernatural)
8. Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)
9. Lucifer (Supernatural/ played by Mark Pelligrino)
10. Richard Harrow (Boardwalk Empire)

Honorable Mentions:
Tyrone Biggums (Chappelle's Show)
Agent Nelson Van Alden (Boardwalk Empire)
Saul Goodman (Breaking Bad)
Huey Freeman (The Boondocks)
Gus Fring (Breaking Bad)
Shane Vendrell (The Shield)
The Monster (Penny Dreadful)
Peter Petrelli (Heroes)

Good list. I was going to include Kenny Powers but had to bump him to 11.

WZ, sell the good doctor on Rectify. You'll do a better job of it than I could.

It's probably the most honest, emotional show I've seen outside of "Six Feet Under" except it doesn't get kitschy the way SFU did sometimes.

it's definitely not for everyone and sometimes it's a tough hour to get through because so much happens--that isn't action--and there's a lot of depth to it.

for me it was very refreshing to know it got to have its full run, and ended in a satisfying way. that's rare for a TV show, especially nowadays.

Alright, if I should watch one of the three, where do I start -

Rectify
Six Feet Under
The Shield

"The Shield" is the most accessible of those 3. "Six Feet Under" takes a little bit to get going. There was a little bit of experimentalism going on in the first season. A lot more humor than "Rectify", which is an emotionally exhausting show. To me that's what made it so satisfying though.

All 3 are great shows in their own right.

So far, I'm thinking Tony Soprano, Hank Kingsley, Homer Simpson, and George Costanza. Fat and/or bald seems to be a prerequisite for the televisual elite.

You need to die in a phone booth fire.

Rockford and Archie Bunker are automatics in the top 10.

Ooh, excellent call on Michael Scott. Too bad the writers got addicted to that likable-pathos model and created the dreadful Parks and Recreation.

The first few seasons of the office they wrote the Michael Scott character in a "mean" funny way, last 2 seasons he was on not so much unless it was towards Toby (which was always funny)

Like the Kenny Powers mention.

Some current characters:

Kev - Shameless
Marty Kaan - House of Lies
Howard Wolowitz - Big Bang
Sen. Gil John Biggs - Alpha House
Mickey Donovan - Ray Donovan

No Uncle Junior love here? I thought he was easily the best character on the Sopranos. That scene where he sees that fucked up court sketch of him is fucking hilarious.
