I've always eaten the top first...

on the rare occasion there are free muffins about the office, I will eat the top and throw away the bottom...would not buy a muffin.

I rarely eat a muffin, but when I do, I just bite into it. Seems like a lot of people are putting too much thought into this.

You eat the stump first to get the lesser part out of the way so you can then enjoy the top part properly ... sort of going out on a high note, to keep with the Seinfeldian leanings of the bored.
