Been thinking about playing an RPG (or something similar) to kill some time. Kind of sick of shooters.

Any recommendations for an RPG novice?

A modern one or an old one?

Old, Final Fantasy Tactics, FF VI, FF VII (if you have the time), Baldur's Gate 2. Knights of the Old Republic 1 an 2, Ultima 7, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

Newish, Witcher 3 and Elder Scrolls Skyrim,

Is Skyrim overly-complicated with the weapons and crafting and whatnot?

final fantasy 5 [the japanese none]

xenogears / xenosaga

i personally enjoyed the hell out of the first ~5/+ dragon quest games [dragon warrior in america], uhhhhh you could always try something like the phantasy star series too but i personally never really fucked with those *shrug*

also i remember more gimmicky stuff like super mario RPG and [at least] the first 2 kingdom hearts games being pretty good!

Smithing has very simple recipes and ingredients in Skyrim. Many mod it to make it more complex.

Witcher 3 is the only correct answer here.

I thought I hated RPG's till I played Witcher3. There's a reason it won game of the year and is considered by MANY to be the best RPG ever.

I'm going to need you to start naming names because I don't know if I ever seen this before.

Mario RPG was my gateway drug into RPGs...thought I liked it because it was a Mario game but looking back it's all the Square touches that make me really love it.

Not at all. Honestly, you could play through the whole game without ever even worrying about crafting and smithing weapons. Just depends on what kind of character you want to play.

I've been reading a thread that retranslates FF6. It's amazing what a hash they made of the original dialogue because it was such a rush job. It was still a great game when it came out, but if they had properly translated all the depth and nuance of the script, it would have been an unimpeachable masterpiece.

Skyrim is good ... Oblivion was good too ... Morrowind was the best all things being equal.

A bit outside the box is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning ... that was the game Schilling's horseshit game company made ... I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Baldur's Gate
Avernum: Escape from the Pit
Etherlords II
Heroes of Might & Magic
"King's Bounty" series (if you like a HOMM type game)
Frogger

For modern RPG's, this.

IMU, this thread. Called it the best modern RPG ever. Not sure what the cutoff is for modern, but I'm sure that puts it ahead of Skyrim, the other game being hyped in this thread.

Also for purposes of this thread, I would assume best modern RPG is equivalent to best RPG ever since I doubt the TC wants to go back and play a game from 20 years ago vs something great that came out in the past 2 years.

I reference the modern "open world" style of RPG's... let's call them Western RPG's.

The Witcher 3 is the best of the bunch.

It takes a large open world, as they all do, and actually fills it with real stories, real characters and meaningful quests. It does not use a "cave template" and repeat it in 20 different locations on a map with slight variances.

Skyrim and Fallout are simply boring games after Witcher 3. I could not even play more than 15-20 hours of Fallout 4... a game I wanted to love ... since the quality and scale of Witcher 3 just ruined it.

On a related note, I'm struggling a bit with the dialogue/story/voice acting in Horizon: Zero Dawn because it pales in comparison to W3 in that department. I'm still very early in the game so hopefully it will pick up, but that damn W3 sure did set the bar high.

I don't think W3 is miles and miles ahead of Skyrim, but I certainly will give W3 credit for being awesome right out of the box. There's a ton of mods that make Skyrim awesome on PC, but W3 pretty much had everything right from the get go.

Shakes, I could do without any of the video style plot in Horizon. Every time they play a video, I am like, get on with it. The game play is decent. I am still getting lost in the expansive world, which seems quite empty. As mainly a computer gamer, I am still struggling with the PS4 controller. I am used to keyboard/mouse gaming, so my dexterity for console games ended with the NES system.

in general I like to skip cutscenes, but after playing W3 I'm trying to give the story in Horizon a chance. So far, not too interesting, but I'm still very early in the game so hoping it picks up.

I need to give W3 another spin. I broke it out one night after I had been drinking and I didn't care for it as much as everyone hyped it.

Fair enough. Guess we've just heard different things from different people. At least half the stuff I read when the game came out mentioned the controls being a problem to the point that it was frustrating to play and a lot of fetch quests where you were originally looking for person A which led to looking for person B,C,D,etc to get there.

Same. I gave it a couple hours decently into a bottle of Jack and was really bored.

Personally my favorite I've played (huge caveat as I started at X)...loved the gambit system...I know a lot of people didn't...also really dug never really having an encounter randomly pop up.
