Maybe. The extension was criminal.
The trade was great. It didnt work out. Sometimes that happens.

The extension was criminal.

There are at least three worse moves the organization has made: Phil Emery, Marc Trestman, Ted Phillips

Drafting Oden over Durant was a great idea. It just didn't work out.

you know, while saying "Cutler is one of the all-time great bear quarterbacks" is basically like being "i'm the best looking guy!" when you hang out with a bunch of 400lb+ people, still, i can't help but think that in the end jay wasn't as bad as people technically [seem to?] think... he was just irrevocably fucked up by the fact that when he came here people thought he'd be the kind of QB that's, say, what aaron rodgers is to the packers [he can make a bad-to-"meh" team .500+ and perennially get em into the playoffs every year and ??? cuz "they're the team with aaron rodgers"] and when that didnt work out, welp, this was the future you chose when you gave up on a bonafide WINRAR like Boilermaker Ortman.

also, re: leadership while i'm not going to absolve jay for not being what he clearly was [hoped/supposed] to be-- a leader-- i wanna point out that he had an uphill battle from the getgo cuz if you remember when he first showed up he had an aging urlacher like "OH HELL NO, THIS FUCKTARD AINT COMING IN HERE AND TAKING OVER MY TEAM!!!!" and you can go ask cedric benson how fun it is to be a bear when brian, lance, and the defensive boys have it out for you. while cutler =/= ced, at the same time he wasn't ever gonna lead shit while urlacher and briggs were here, and in the first season post-54+55 [2015] go figure jay got [relative?] props for being more of a leader and had what was maybe his best overall season as a bear...

...but by the time 2016 rolled around the team was really quick to throw him under the bus as the reason everything's fucked up cuz once management realized 2016 was going to hell in a handbasket they decided that jumping in on the "fuck cutler" sentiment was cheaper than paying two GMs and two HCs for a year or two or whatever.... so last year everything [officially?] became jay's fault and the bears tossed him out there as a sacrifical lamb to go take the wrath of the fanbase who saw whatever glimmers of hope/promise 2015 showed completely disappear [just like cutler's bears career] once we got kool-aided up enough to start saying "boy you know i don't wanna go there but this barkley kid can sure release a quick ball can he not? --- yeah, he can release it to the other team even quicker than jay could dream of!

so yeah this day was obviously coming and barring some miracle 2010-packers type SB run/victory nobody was ever gonna embrace jay as "their quarterback" given what we've seen in the 2010s.... but at the very least let's not lose sight of the fact that 1) dude wasn't ever gonna lead this team til urlacher+briggs left and 2) it's harder to succeed when you have 5 OCs in 7 years [and one of those 2yr guys is marc trestman, seeing as 2011 = year 2 of martz = that bears team was like 7-3 or 8-4 or something when they beat the chargers in another "big boy 3pm AFC shootout game" [the type that bernstein personally looked forward to when cutler signed here] BUT...

as if we needed a proper symbol/epitome of cutler's time as a bear, jay broke his thumb and ended up missing the rest of the season [read: HANIETIME!!!!] after throwing a meaningless INT when the [7-3/8-4] bears were up like 38-24 in the 4th and he tried to defend the INT return...... and then the resulting thumb fracture has him miss the rest of the season, which has them miss the playoffs, and thus no chance to exorcise the demons of the 2010-11 NFC Championship Game. that sums up "the jay cutler era" in chicago perfectly for me: tantalizing physical tools that, at their best, could get you to close your eyes and dream big all "why not us?" --- but then you end up getting a stupid injury at a meaningless time that causes the team/org to be exposed for a woeful lack of depth at the most important skill positions that means if everything doesnt go 100% right it all falls to shit akin to marion barber stepping out of bounds right before TEBOWTIME!!!! *that* is the jay cutler era for me--- happy trails jay!

oh yeah and btw, i'll bet that one of these teams in "the tony romo sweepstakes" who don't end up getting homo ends up scooping up cutthead as a plan B and he ends up having a better season than romo does [due to injury or otherwise]

I'll admit that drafting a crippled bum over a perennial MVP candidate and HOF'er is dumb. Was that the choice facing Portland in 2007?

Cutler cost dozens of people their jobs....Angelo, Lovie, how many OC's and all the other assistants that lost their jobs in the transitions. Emery hired Trestman because of Cutler. Cutler committed career genocide.

Lolwat? Cutler didn't cost Lovie his job, and even if Treatment (what my phone thinks of "Trestman") was hired for Jay holy shit all you gotta do is sit with the guy in a cabin in the woods on a stormy night and look into his eyes and gaze into his soul to see that "this guy shouldn't be coaching a NFL team!"

Seriously, by the end of the Trestman era you had Zach RED ALERT Zaidman on Bears all access Live with someone saying "You hire Mel Tucker if you want to be bad at defense" AND ZACH DIDNT EVEN CORRECT THE GUY OR TRY TO OFFER CHERRY PICKED STATS TO THE CONTRARY (anyone familiar with Zach knows he'll carry enough water for the Bears til the glass is half full in terms of trying to paint a rosy picture of the blBears' overall organizational ineptitude)

Seriously, Jay didn't help himself or especially the Bears by being some kind of a [world-class?] pudwhack who married one of the more inherently forgettable ppl from the Hills or whatever.... But let's not pretend that Jay singlehandedly set the bears back a decade when they're overall a backwards-at-best joke of an organization who probably couldn't even trip stumble and fall into a good hire if god personally shoved them into the Belichick coaching tree!

Nope, just fired for making one of the worst trades in Bear history, and he was fired for that reason so it's all good.

 You can't keep your revisionist history straight. Angelo was fired for sucking at drafting, and the whole Sam Hurd thing might have played a role too. Cutler was still "the guy" when Angelo left. In fact they started 7-3 that year before Cutler got hurt, and went to the NFC championship game the year before, so you're way off.

Gase was the only OC he didn't get canned, he let Jay throw screen passes and 12 yards and under in 3 step drops for his only year here.

Acquiring a 25 year old pro bowl QB is a lot different than hiring the Argonauts coach.

This coming from a guy who said Aaron Rodgers was no longer a top 3 QB.

So yeah, you continue to be way off.

Yep, I'm way off. The cutler trade was obviously a great one. Interesting limb you and Frank are sitting on right now.

The Bears made the right trade for all the right reasons. Like the lottery, it didn't work out. No way to predict the mediocrity and other bullshit. Rick is right in criticizing the extension. But they were right to acquire him and him not fulfilling his potential is on no one but himself.

We all thought Cutler was a good idea at the time. I remember calling my boss and wishing him "Happy Cutler Day." But we were fooled. Josh Mcdaniels had him pegged for what he is - a QB with all the tools who will never know how to win a fucking football game. So long, douchebag.

dude! stop talking sense around here; didn't you get the memo? the talking points = 1) jay cutler singlehandedly genocided more bears careers than ginny ending the honey bears! lovie, trestman, angelo, emery, and of course 5 OFFENSIVE COORDINATORS IN 7 YEARS!? ergo 2) jay is objectively worse than hitler, cuz last i checked while uncle adolf played out his "take over the world" fantasy HE DIDN'T GET A SINGLE BEARS PERSON FIRED!

nevermind that even my packers friend texted me "Yeah [jay] was expensive i guess. Chicago hates him now anyways. But you and I both know Chicago is wrong, it ain't Jay, it's the Bears who suck!" --- DUMBSHIT WOULDNT KNOW FOOTBALL IF HE TOOK IT UP THE ASS FROM BART STARR WHILE VINCE LOMBARDI WATCHED ATTENTIVELY AND "TOOK NOTES" -- IT'S ALL CUTLER ALL DAY AKA #MCCASKEYDIDNOTHINGWRONG!

I never thought the trade was a good idea, I hated it from day 1, I was not alone..I remember driving home from work and B n B were on, they were acting like we just traded for Aaron Rodgers, half the calls were guys saying this trade sucked and turdstein shouted them all down, the only voice of reason were Mac and Hub on the Score that day, they said what many of us were saying, this guy isn't very good and we gave up wayyy too much ..the only rebuttal the dopes had was " Jerry can't draft so what good are 2 firsts and a third anyway "

Blaming everyone but Cutler for everything makes sense.

I said in 2000, Tom Brady was the steal of the draft
