Just picked up a couple gorgeous Mausers (one is a Kar98 the other is a Zastava M24/47) both have all matching numbers and just look wonderful. Problem, though...both are literally coated in cosmoline. I managed to get field strip both so the metal parts are enjoying a nice bath but these wooden stocks are horrible and I know I cant dont the same for them.

Around the internet ideas seem to range from easy-but-impossible (leave outside on a hot day...) to insane (put it in the oven). Anyone have any experience with this that has a good method?

Not a gun guy. Sorry.

But it sounds like it's worth a shot.

No experience with it but you could try a heat lamp to mimic sun. Probably put in a lack plastic bag (the stock not the light obviously) to try to heat it up without putting in actual oven.

Stick your head in the oven.

Rub some oil on it, wrap a big rubber band around it, then leave it in the sun.

When an opportunity like this presents itself, pull the trigger.
