This has to be the one of the most unknown to me Illini squads since the days of their probation

Well, you missed a hell of an Andy Kauffman buzzer-beater against Iowa.

I can't remember who threw the in-bounds pass, but that really made the play. He had that big goof Acie Earl all up in his face.

He's not Russian.

Open the Big Ten season early tonight on the road at Maryland who is a team just outside the Top 25 polls. Going to be a tough
test for the Illini. ESPN2 at 4pm.

Brutal performance yesterday. I turned it off at halftime, and doesn't appear I missed much in the 2nd half. This team hasn't
proven they can step up their game against better than average competition.

Another pathetic performance by the Illini. I didn't watch the game, but starting to lose faith that Groce can actually
coach anybody up. Are the Illini that outclassed by the competition? Most of their losses are teams that are ranked
or near the rankings, but when they line up against those guys they are getting beat by double digits more times than
not. Another year with no trip to the NCAA. I'm glad he has some strong recruits coming in, but just not sure that
will make much difference with him at the helm. Hard for me to say because I have been behind him his entire
tenure.

As far as Illini hoops goes I am pretty much sick of it. Since Self left there has been a steady decline. I really don't need to hear about the location of the school or the lack of kissing rings of HS coaches. There are other areas in the country that are worse for a lot of reasons and they do just fine.

Hire the right person and first rate facilities (for both MONEY) and recruit harder.

Groce can't coach and he hasn't really lived up to his recruiting reputation. He will be fired after this season. Probably lose his top recruit for it, but what does it matter at that point.

The question becomes, who can you replace him with? Whitman went for a big splash with Lovie (good or bad). Will he do that with Groce's replacement, too? Can he?

A buddy on Facebook has the crying Jordan pasted on the Chief Illiniwek mascot symbol but this will have to do as I can't
find the chief one.

This really does need to end, but they also need to realize that hiring a promising young coach means that he will only be there for 3 years. Because either he'll shine and get lured elsewhere, or he'll shit the bed as badly as Groce has.

He gone.

Quote:
CBS) After five underwhelming seasons, Illinois coach John Groce’s time is done in Champaign.

The university has fired Groce, it announced Saturday. The decision comes on the heels of Groce’s Illini failing to make the NCAA Tournament for four straight seasons now.

“I want to thank John Groce and his staff for their tireless efforts over these past five years,” Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said in a statement. “In many ways, John is a model leader. He exudes optimism and tackles every day with unbelievable energy. He has the highest integrity. He has been an active presence in our community and a strong public ambassador for Illinois Basketball. Most importantly, he loves his players unconditionally and helps them develop into young men prepared for the next stages of their lives. Our student-athletes are having a positive experience, achieving record heights in the classroom, and leaving campus as proud graduates with bright futures.

Whitman should have gone on to say:

Quote:
But unfortunately, his teams sucked. He couldn't recruit, and he was a horrible in-game coach. The last AD was a dumbass for hiring him. I will try to do better, but now nobody wants the fucking job.

Still, I couldn't let this dumbass continue to be around here."

Best player on top 10 West Virginia is Big 12 defensive player of the year Jevon Carter--out of Proviso East. The guy started two years and played big minutes all four years. Groce didn't even recruit him. Oops.
