Is it worth the time?

Obviously a very famous (and epic) fantasy series, so I feel like it's something I have to read at some point in my life. But I've heard everything from "this is a blatant rip-off of Lord of the Rings" to "it's the best thing you will ever read."

The first five are great
The rest by the original author are uneven to bad (especially the last one he wrote)
The last three of the series that are written by Brandon Sanderson are the best books of the series.

These are so effing long.

I'm currently halfway through Book 5, but I haven't read a page in months. It just feels...daunting.

That was my biggest complaint.
He would have hundreds of pages go by and nothing happens and then something really good happens then nothing for another 100 pages.
He really could have used a good editor.

I kept reading and reading and reading and reading hoping for epicness. I determined that Jordan must have been getting paid by the word. He goes on and on with his descriptions, way beyond necessity.

The books could easily be edited in half and be a much better read.

So what I'm hearing is that I'd be better off reading Patrick Rothfuss.

Yes or Brandon Sanderson's other work (mistborn, stormlight archive)

They are good books. I'm not necessarily advising against it.

But you need time. Being the Dragon Reborn could help with that.

If these were good they would make them a tv show.

They sort of did, the one episode starred Billy Zane. It was pretty awful.

Another author that I can't recommend high enough is Joe Abercrombie. His First Law trilogy is fantastic as is the shattered sea trilogy. Also, with Rothfuss, read chronicles 1 and 2. DO NOT READ the slow regard of quiet things. It isn't volume three...it is a one off about a supporting character that isn't good.

I really liked them. I stopped at Knife of Dreams and need to read the last three books. It took me 4.5 years to read those 11 books. :?

I finished mistborn on your recommendation and it was awesome. I only did the trilogy though. Would you recommend reading the other books in that universe, or move on to stormlight.

Also would wheel of time make sense doing the first 5 and the last 3 by sanderson?

I'll hang up and listen for my response.

The other mistborn books are good but different, they take place 200 hundred years later and are in a western-esque land. I just read the most recent one and I like them.
Stormlight is better (at this point) than mistborn but the problem is that the series isn't close to being finished (it's planned to be a 10 book series and book 3 comes out in November) and the books are ridiculously long (over 1000 pages each); so it will be a while before it is done but man the first two books are fantastic.
Wheel of time - that is exactly what I would do, I would read the first five and that get the plot synopsis for the other books on wikipedia or something and then go into the Sanderson books.

Jackref recommended First Law Trilogy and it was very very good.

As far as Kingkiller Chronicles... The first book is fantastic. The first half of the second book is good but the second half is a pile of shit. It's that fat troll Rothfuss just living out his nerd fantasies for hundreds of pages. I still have no idea how he wraps everything up in one more book. He probably doesn't either and that's why hes on the GRRM track.

That was my thought too...He set himself up for a trilogy in the first book and now he hasn't even gotten halfway through the story by the end of the second book. It is a GRRM/Robert Jordan track (Jordan originally planned the WOT to be four or five books).

this. perfect summation. BS made me wish he'd written the whole thing and introduced me to the Cosmere which is now one of my favorite "worlds" i guess you could say.

He actually retired last year. His daughter seems to be a nice piece of ass, so he's left a legacy.
