The board under bigfan was routinely besieged by Turkish hackers. He also nuked about four years' worth of board history because there was TOO MUCH STUFF and he thought deleting text would somehow be a remedy to whatever the actual problem was.
If I may defend bigfan, I'm going to guess some of that bad advice was coming from the hosting company. They seem to have some low level techs that basically have the job of telling you something that ends the conversation no matter how incorrect it is. "Go delete posts with lots of replies!" would probably get a person off the phone if the person wasn't technical enough to know that was not going to change anything.

So I'm going to guess the suggestion received from tech support was "go delete the Dicaro thread"
They kept on telling me to optimize the board. I kept on telling them that I can't do anything and none of the options they gave worked.

The American based techs were very good once I got that far though. They quickly figured out that there may be an actual problem. Fixing it took a while though.

So you're basically saying they are as helpful as ITaP once was...

Pretty much.

I actually give bigfan credit for being able to deal with them with his seemingly limited technical knowledge.

He is free to come back here and post his side of the story. Its been almost a year now and he hasn't done that. I think his actions speak louder than any of his words have.

The difference in how it works now is negligible. The board does not "go down daily." Occasionally we get the 'too many connections' message and the site doesn't load. This generally does not last longer than ten minutes, and happened under bigfan too.

America wrote:
Point is bigfan gets shit on constantly by people here and I dont think he should.
Why? And don't say just because he started the site. He was unanimously praised for starting the site and running it for so long. MANY people how issues with the way he handled certain things, but he was given kudos from everybody when he made the announcement that he would no longer be running things.

America wrote:

As I just said, bigfan has not told his side of the story to anybody. Feel free to reach out to him and see what he says.

In my initial call, they immediately offered to reset the board to 12:00AM Tuesday.

Was that ever even a possibility Rick?

The only thing I noticed before it completely went down was a bunch of the SQL too many or max connections things for a little bit then poof.

I have seen those errors a hell of a lot over the last year but not as many as the old days. Obviously, you can't do much with what just happened but I would think the SQL connections thing should be fixable.

There is nothing that could have been done to our individual stuff that would have fixed anything.

It had to do with the total resources of the server in which ours and many other sites all share. I assume the reason we woke up to it working was because they rebooted the whole thing overnight to limit other customers downtime though I can't know that for sure.

We couldn't even do the equivalent of "ctrl-alt-delete" on our forum to restart it. They finally realized the major issue when I asked them do it through the command line and the guy couldn't even get into it.

I'm not going to blame them completely though. Computers still sometimes fail no matter how good they are. They could have reacted quicker though to remedy it.

That's absolute horseshit. There isn't one of the three of us who wouldn't sit down for a drink with him tomorrow. I still feel bad about the way things went down. I considered him a friend and really, I still do though I suspect the feeling isn't mutual.

As for his relationships with some of his erstwhile constituents, well those beefs are hardly one-sided. Everybody doesn't like everybody else. That's life. But I'd say for every guy like Chus or leash who dislikes bigfan there is a guy like good dolphin or Dr. Ken who misses him.

My usage of this site comes in waves, but when I'm on a lot I get this multiple times a day.

He did share his side of the story in the last week of May, and the first few days of June 2016. It's here for anyone that wants to read it.

Oh, for Christ's sake, it hasn't functioned any worse than it did before... and it would work even worse if the new management team hadn't protected it from bigfan's "nuclear option."

It doesn't matter because you don't believe any of what you post anyway. You're just trying to ruffle feathers.

 like you can be taken seriously on this matter at all.

I don't know why not. I'm not irrational simply because I didn't like bigfan. This site wouldn't exist without him. But to say that there's a difference in the site now is just nonsense. There is nothing to show that. There is, however, actual proof that the board would not exist without the three who run it now.

I actually had a pretty strong personal dislike for bigfan but, as an adult, I can compartmentalize that and still respect him for what he did with the board. The fact that leash, FF, Chus, Frank and countless others cant is seriously pathetic and reflects extremely poorly on their character. Management, despite some claims to the contrary in this thread, has piled on the guy at times. Even this thread has a lot of "oh if you only know the mess we were left with..."-toned bullshit that continues the trend of scapegoating bigfan for issues I dont think are his fault.

The irony is I like Nas and JORR (Seacrest I know nothing really about) more than bigfan.

That was your fault.

This was an issue with the host so doing a shoutout to the guy who picked the host doesn't make sense. That is why I suggested you edit your post.

I still like bigfan and I wish he still posted here. This was just a strange shoutout given the actual facts.

Ok America, BF shit on Frank for no goddman reason. He was pretty crappy to Leash. FF deserved a lot of the vitriol directed at him. I can't comment on Chus because back in those days I saw Chus and Chas as one poster.

Not really. There's a lot of stuff going on in the threads. I just never paid attention. It was two guys trading insults, and I ignored all of it. Nothing more to it than that.

I honestly thought he must have been some complete asshat, and I was just missing it. I could never understand the angst directed at Frank. I met him twice, and he's fine. I could careless who people cheer for. Good for him for being a loyal Sox fan, but I think Sox fans bothered BF.

 You're a little bitch who just likes to stir the pot. I just stated that the board wouldn't exist without him. Beyond that, you have no idea of what you speak. Bigfan did under-handed things and personally attacked me many times when I couldn't even respond.

You're one to talk about character, though... I don't believe one word that comes out of your mouth. That said, I still realize this is all for attention, so it's really an inconsequential debate. I don't believe you even live in Illinois.
