What are you getting at?

He acted like a lunatic when he was dragged off an airplane after his head was put into an arm rest.

I think there's more to this guy then just the innocent doctor that was wronged.

Like what though? I honestly just don't understand. Do you think he was actually a terrorist? Did he somehow plan this to have a video of his stomach being dragged down the aisle go worldwide?

I think the guy is mentally ill. I get being pissed about being involuntarily bumped out of your seat. But at the point where Chicago Cops are asking you to leave (because you didn't want to comply with airline staff), I think you get out of your seat and take your complaint up with the airline.

I just don't understand how the situation went from "do we have any volunteers" to forcibly removing someone from the airplane. And why specifically that guy? To JORR's question, how did they choose him?

In terms of process, I'm not seeing how the situation escalates that quickly and in that manner.

Furthermore, I'm not buying that he was knocked unconscious only to get back on the plane and start acting like a lunatic. I understand people can act oddly in stressful situations, but this seems very suspicious.

This is inching closer to reality in my opinion. Did this guy have a psychological break from being drug out of an airplane?

Think of the bump list as the reverse order of the upgrade list. They take people with the lowest status and cheapest fares and bump them first.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how this guy would get back on the plane. I guess we need a release of the gate video after he was removed. Maybe they didn't take him completely off the plane and were treating him after the cops worked him over.

In any case, airlines are a little different animal than other parts of life. If a passenger doesn't comply with crew instructions, you are entering tricky territory. While UAL policy sucks, it appears that the crew followed company procedures. It is impossible to justify Chicago Police as they keep using excessive force. There's no heroes here, everyone was just acting dumb.

I think that is a bit of a stretch to say it is mental illness to react poorly when you are being evicted from a plane when you have already sat down. From what I understand he told them that he was a doctor and had a full set of patients to see tomorrow and he needed to get home. We don't know what level of stress he was under beforehand but he only started to act strange when the cops grabbed him and hit his head against an arm rest and then dragged him out.

Once again, this guy was already in his seat ready to fly and was being evicted for an airline employee to get his seat. This isn't just a guy getting to the gate an hour early and being told "Sorry, no seat".

Is there video of him coming back on the plane? I find it hard to believe that he would be allowed to just walk back on after they dragged him off.

This is my guess.

I may have missed where it showed how much time passed between the two videos, but if that guy was taken off the plane and into the terminal, there's no way he gets back on the plane that easily.

Do you have a link to the second video?

The WSJ article said he was laying on the jet bridge, and then ran back onto the plane.

There are five legit videos, two of angles of the guy being dragged off, two of him standing there bleeding including him asking to be killed, and then one of him walking up and down the aisle with his pants half down. All are in this thread somewhere.

This video looks like he never left the plane. And is much creepier than I had originally thought:

Yup. They also take over airports and push out the competition and then raise prices and cut flights.

There is reason they advertise so much. They desperately need to keep up an appearance that doesn't exist.

While it's true that they aren't as cheap as they were when they first became a national airline they definitely have forced costs down in some major hub markets like Atlanta, Charlotte and Minneapolis. You may believe they push other airlines out but in many cases they are the only thing keeping some airports alive. Most of the major airlines were pulling out of Midway long before SWA took it over.

I could buy that is he acted rationally before he was hit. But I am pretty certain this guy failed to comply with airline staff and CPD. The other three passengers all complied. Maybe more info will come out there will change my mind. And I am not here to defend UAL in any way. I hate that airline and switched to AA about a decade ago. It is literally the worst airline. The cops need to handle that situation a lot better too. No winners here.

We are missing the point. These are Chicago Cops we are sealing with, he is lucky not to have either an entire clip emptied into him or to have fallen down a flight of stairs and broken several ribs on the way to lock up.

I think we should be focusing on how odd it is that this many people were voluntarily going to Louisville...

I am not a huge fan, but it's a decent enough downtown area.

Isn't that the basis of trading on the futures market?

Not to mention the bleachers at Wrigley Field.

That's not really true. They've done it all over the country. The cost cutting is temporary which chases out the other airlines that can't compete and then they cut routes and raise prices and there is literally no other choice. Chicago is lucky it has O'Hare that at least keeps them kind of honest.

When I lived in NY, they basically took over the airport in long island. They ended up being like 80% of the total flights in the airport. You could fly direct to Chicago, Las Vegas, and many other destinations multiple times a day right from there. The flights were packed most of the time. The airport became dependent on Southwest much more than Southwest was dependent on them but it was a very good relationship for both sides. First they started to raise prices. They then bought a few terminals at LaGuardia, and started moving flights there and got rid of all flights to Las Vegas, then Chicago, and then pretty much every place but Baltimore and Florida(for all the old people who leave for the winter). Now, keep in mind Chicago is the main hub of Southwest so it really is disruptive when they cut off flights to there. So that airport went from a place you could get to virtually every place they fly with 0 or 1 stops to a place where you basically were just flying to Baltimore and then going to the more limited places they go. Airport traffic plummeted and that airport is now costing the city millions of dollars and it is proving very difficult to get another airline in there given the control Southwest still has even with how they have virtually abandoned the airport. Now people have to find a way to the terrible LaGuardia airport or accept the limited options available at a once thriving airport.

That isn't just what they did there. They've done it to other places too.

Now, they aren't even trying to be a low cost airline unless you fly on a Wednesday morning or Saturday night so the cost savings is minimal which I mean they can do because capitalism and stuff but we need to stop acting like Southwest is some benevolent company that loves it's customers like it has in the countless commercials they do. They are becoming the Wal-Mart of the airline industry.
