Score is doomed wrote:
It seems to me that there are two shows on in Chicago that have good ratings for a low cost of hosts salaries-

Score- Murphy
1000 - Silvy and Waddle.

Maybe the Score should try that in the mornings and hire someone who won't drive AWAY listeners. What a novel idea, but why do that when you can pay close to a mil for someone who does drive away listeners from your station. Just brilliant. The Score will get what they deserve out of the deal, continuing to come in number 2 in a 2 station race.

I have nothing to base this on but I would think that Waddle is paid more than both Hanley and Mulligan. Silvy im sure is cheap, but he sucks.

Ok, I understand he has some guys who bring in some money, but really, how much can it be? Like I said in a previous post, if North stays in the mornings, someone needs to be fired, because there is no way anyone can explain how a show that has won one book in 5 years deserves that.

I've said this a couple of times in other posts, but for some reason several of you don't seem to get it. I hate to shout but you've left me no choice...
IT'S ABOUT REVENUE...NOT RATINGS!!! NORTH CLEARLY GENERATES MORE THAN HIS FAIR SHARE OF REVENUE. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO MATTER WHAT HIS RATINGS ARE - HE BRINGS IN THE CASH AND THAT'S WHAT COUNTS TO HIS BOSSES. JUST ACCEPT IT!
Look, I'm in agreement for the most part regarding the quality of his show. It's just pointless to talk about ratings as long as he is bringing in $$$.

I'm saying why not try and get a guy who can get better ratings and more revenue? The listeners are there. Look at what Mike and Mike have. As a radio station you should try for both and actually have a show people listen to.

OK, I will bow to your radio acumen, but bear with me as I ask a question. Do not stations get to base their ad rates on the ratings? Does a higher-rated show get to charge more for commercials? If so, then what you're saying is that North has this incredible stable of "his guys" that are so loyal to him, they pay to have their commercials on the Score at a rate much higher than his ratings justify? For "his ratings not to matter" it seems to me then that he must have hoodwinked a lot of people to overpay for their ads on the Score. I just find it hard to believe that his revenue-generating power INDEPENDENT OF HIS RATINGS is so great that the Score is better off keeping him around at his salary than going in a new direction in the morning and trying to capture some of ESPN's audience and build revenue the traditional way--by having good ratings. How many of his sponsors are "his guys" that couldn't be replaced if a higher-rated show took his place? Just wondering.

Don't forget--he sucks so bad that in the last book, he not only lost to Mike&Mike, he lost to the first hour of Silvy as well. Then, as soon as Mully & Hanley came on, the Score went ahead of ESPN. People seem to actually go out of their way to AVOID listening to this guy and he can still generate so much revenue? I'm just trying to understand how this can be.

I think those who scream revenue need to shut up and pick subjects that they are better equipped to discuss. First and foremost it's not about revenue, it's about profit. Clear, unincumbered, excess dough that you can take home. That aside though. Back to that revenue thing. Revenue is a tricky SOB to figure out and associate with a specific personality, especially in a large organization, especially with a big budget operation that is Mike's show. Someone who brings up a revenue point better show me a calculation of such revenue based on a method adequate for the organization in question with every piece of it supported by hard direct evidence. Anything short of that has less credibility than the dumbest of Rusty's postulations.

That being said, as a card carrying member of Mike's fan club, I'm glad they are not pulling the plug on him. I would, however, like to see him back under contract with iron clad stipulations that he will have no control over programming or staffing, including on-air partners, of his show. As far as what he gets paid, it's not my money and is none of my business.

I agree. The sponsors are business people. You mean to tell me they look at his ratings and say...

"Yeah, the billing rate should be this for the amount of listeners Pappy has, but ya know what, I want to pay double that because I like Pappy."

If that's the case they are stupid at business. I don't think it's the case. Why wouldn't anyone want to pay more than they should? Why would they want to overpay for a smaller reach? They don't.

I don't know if they can, but could the Score grab Czaban for the morning off the syndication bird? Do only the Fox radio stations get a shot? The Czabe is everything North (and Greenberg and Golic) are not---funny, quick-witted, and actually AMUSING AND INTERESTING!!!!!

My God, if anyone tried to aim a morning show at Chicago sports fans without doing the "Superfan" thing, they would make a mint.

I understand that he brings in money, its important, fine, then put his ass in sales and put a show on from 6-10 that isnt a infomercial for Mike and all his events after work. I am not hating on Mike, I hope he stays, I do, but not in the mornings or where he has total control of the show. It hasnt worked and I even think his biggest fans here honestly can say that.

Look, I freely admit to having no radio acumen. And I would agree that it would seem logical that higher ratings translates into higher revenue. However, for whatever reason, The Score outbills the higher rated WMVP by a large margin. That is not my opinion, it is a fact. Now I can't say specifically what portion North is in that equation, but based on his salary and other items written in the local press he does bring home a disproportionate share of the bacon.

Here is another factor. Everybody thinks that because Pappy makes the most in Chicago sports radio that he earns the most revenue.

Not the case.

B&B have to split the shows worth in their salaries. MJH have to split it 3 ways. Mac makes the most but J&H make a pretty penny I'm sure.

Fred doesn't make much. He's just the update/yes man guy. So don't get confused with Pappy making the most cuz other shows have to divide it up amongst its partners.

That's probably one of the reason the Score never gave Pappy an equal partner for years. They pay him so much they couldn't afford another guy.

How's the view from the high horse Coach? Obviously profit is the ultimate goal of any company. Now I'm no CPA, but I'll bet revenue figures into that in some small way. I know you think I should just "shut-up", but I point out the revenue figure because it is documented and because so many on this board focus soley on the ratings. I certainly can't provide you with any "calculations" or "hard evidence", but given the fact that the people who do have that information are offering North another contract reportedly approaching 7 figures, I'm guessing they think he's worth it.

Well, the Score was paying him 1.5. Now they are offering him 800k. That's a pretty big pay cut. It seems to me like they were losing money. If this "offer" report is true of course. But Pappy seemed content with the 800k offer in the Teddy article. So he must know he wasn't making up that 1.5 million.

So the obvious question for Pappy. If he's been such a great money maker for the Score, and the ratings don't matter for ad revenue, then why the 700k pay cut?

If I was Dan Mc Neil, I'd be upset about all the crap I had to take while getting historically high ratings for only 600K per year.

Mac seems content. Like I said, he has to split his show 3 ways. If he didn't like Harry or Jurko I think he'd be pissed. He likes both of them. If he thought he totally carried the show he'd be pissed. I think he really believes they've helped him become a #1 show.

Obviously they thought he would do better in the mornings with a new format than he did. He was over-paid...we agree on that. Still, he will continue to be the highest paid sports gabber in the market - despite the poor ratings. Either he is doing well in terms of advertisers or his bosses are overly-generous idiots. While I'm sure you could make a good argument that they are idiots, I don't think anyone in the industry would call them spendthrifts.

I don't understand why North's comments to the press piss everybody off so much. If Greenstein gave any one of us a forum to publicly campaign for big money, we would do the same.

North's only job there was to present his side of the story, not to discuss why a couple guys on the CSFMB don't like him. Not his fault if the the story's totally biased towards him.

I would venture to guess it is more than "a couple" and maybe he paid off the reporter....

It's not just a couple of guys on CSFMB that don't like Pappy. It's every one of Mike and Mike's listeners. Which is a pretty sizeable listenership.

He didn't pay off Greenstien. Now if we were talking about Feder, thats a different story. Greenstien has gone after North in the past and if this was just a pure fluff piece then why get into all the ratings info about how he is losing and losing badly.
