Former Bears linebacker to run for Palatine mayor
Radio co-host says he'll bring new energy to council meetings
By Vikki Ortiz
Tribune reporter
February 25, 2008
A former linebacker and special teams player for the Chicago Bears has announced plans to tackle a job now held by one of the northwest suburb's longer serving mayors.
Jim Schwantz, a linebacker for the Bears and the Dallas Cowboys during his six-year NFL career, said Monday that he would run next year for Palatine mayor.
"I'm a product of Palatine," Schwantz said. "For the better part of 30 years, I've taken advantage of everything Palatine offers. I felt at this point, it's time for me to start giving back."
He said he has respect for incumbent Rita Mullins. But he said he thought he could bring a new energy to Village Council meetings.
Schwantz, a football star at Fremd High School in Palatine and later at Purdue University, is a radio co-host of Chicago Bears pre- and postgame shows on WBBM-AM.
Mullins has been mayor of Palatine since 1989. Mullins sought the GOP nomination for an Illinois Senate seat in 2006 but lost a contentious primary to Matt Murphy.

What does this mean? What does Palatine have to offer. It's just another NW suburb. They're all the same. No different than Arlington Heights, Mt. Prospect or Des Plaines. They just decided to mark off the land so they can call them different names.

Well, with that comment Schwantz sounds like a politician. I hope he restores Palatine to whatever the hell it was before. If it was anything before.

I dunno. Let's play word association.

Arlington Heights: horseracing
Mt. Prospect: old people
Des Plaines: bowling alleys
Palatine: Browns chicken murders

See, they all have individual personalities.

Well, Des Plaines is known more for having the first McDonalds and being the home of serial killer John Wayne Gacey. That beats having bowling alleys. That's actually a pretty good legacy for a NW suburb. No other suburb can beat it.

Nope. It was Des Plaines. At least that's where lived for his serial killer career. He might have lived else where at some point. But the bodies were found in his Des Plaines home.

I know my serial killers. I'll beat all of you in Serial Killer trivia.

I grew up on Cumberland right by what I was told was the Gacy house. Maybe I'm wrong.

I googled some info. He did live on Summerdale Radio Ray. But in Des Plaines. Not Chicago.

His house was demolished a few years after his arrest.

I did some more research. It's weird. Some articles called it Norwood Park. Other articles called it "the unincorporated area of Norwood Park". Sometimes they called it Des Plaines. Sometimes they called it both. Here is one that called it both.
http://www.newcriminologist.com/gacy/index.htm

Here is one reference that clearly says his home was on Summerdale Ave. in Des Plaines, Ill.

Here is one that shows a picture of the new house built after Gacy's house was demolished. Read the caption under the picture. It clearly says Des Plaines. Read the 10th paragraph on this page. It says he moved to Des Plaines in 1975.
http://crimemagazine.com/boykillergacy.htm

As I read more stuff I do know Des Plaines detectives were the ones that searched his house initially.

Ok. What about the last link I posted? Look, if I am wrong then I am wrong. But I've heard Des Plaines was his home my whole life. I've been validated by some internet sites.

I watched the bad movie on Gacy. I remember them referring to Des Plaines as his home and where he buried the bodies. Obviously it's been reported that way by some. I think you can search the net and find that to be so. So if I'm wrong then so are others. But that's what I was always lead to believe. That he lived in Des Plaines.

I remember that movie. Gacy was played by Francis from Pee Wee's Big Advenure. He was also in Leprechaun.

Here is what I think is the case now that I think about it. At the time his home location was classified as "unincorporated area of Norwood Park". That area has since become a part of Des Plaines.

Maybe that's what it is. But in some accounts it clearly says he lived in Des Plaines.

Go to my above post and my 3rd web page link Nos. Explain that picture on the top of the page with the caption and the 10th paragraph on that page.

Here is Gacy's mug shot in 1978 after his arrest. It says Des Plaines Police Dept under his chin. Why would he be booked at the Des Plaines Police station if he lived in Chicago?

I think part of the problem is that we don't know what damn town that street is on. I can picture the spot perfectly. I always thought it was Norridge, but it could be Norwood Heights. Park Ridge is right over I-90.

The OJ get-the-hell-out-of-LA hotel is only a couple of blocks from the spot on Cumberland, so I'd like to keep murderer parallelism if at all possible.

Perhaps because the Des Plaines PD made the arrest pursuant to their own investigation (Des Plaines resident was the victim for the 'first' arrest/underlying charge) Don't know this as the fact, just a possibility.

But really, Norwood Park, unincorporated Cook County, Des Plaines, what's the real difference? ---But the local news at the time sure in the hell did make him out to be a suburbanite

Remember IB, OJ was never convicted of murder, a criminal charge, but 'just' wrongful death in a civil courtroom.
