Mitchell (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is drawing rave reviews after first minicamp

While it seems like the NFL world is in agreement that the Chicago Bears somehow made an unforgivable error by moving up one spot to draft quarterback Mitchell (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky, there doesn’t seem to be any buyer’s remorse from the Bears.

(Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky was the story of the draft after the Bears moved up from No. 3 to No. 2, giving up a couple third-round picks and a fourth, to take the North Carolina quarterback. That move has been mocked endlessly by most, though that criticism assumes (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky wasn’t worth the pick. We don’t know that yet.

The reviews from the Bears’ first minicamp were good. Most mentioned (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky’s plus arm strength and accuracy. Bears coach John Fox said (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky had a “great camp,” while reminding everyone he was just a few weeks into his pro career.

“You’ve got to get him up to speed in your offense,” Fox said. “A guy, regardless of position, has to get comfortable on what to do and how to do it, then cut loose and play.”

The thing about the (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky pick is nobody can rule out that general manager Ryan Pace was absolutely correct in his evaluation that he’s a future franchise quarterback. Pace isn’t on an island in his love for (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky. An NFL personnel director compared (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky to Aaron Rodgers. Everyone seemed to agree he was worth a top 10-12 pick, so it isn’t that far off to take him second. And CSN Chicago had a couple very interesting quotes from NFL scouts last week about (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky.

“Two AFC scouts revealed that they had the highest grade on (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky that they’d had on any quarterback over the past six years. That means: higher than Jameis Winston; higher than Marcus Mariota; higher than Cam Newton; higher than Russell Wilson; higher than Andrew Luck; higher than Derek Carr; higher than Carson Wentz.”

Wow. If that wasn’t enough …

“The evaluation of one NFC regional scouting team was that “(Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is an almost perfect quarterback prospect” and that ‘the Bears should count their lucky stars he only started 13 games because if he was a two-year starter, he goes 1/1 [overall No. 1] without hesitation.”

Wow again.

The fact is, if Pace was right (and if these scouts who spoke to CSN Chicago are too) and (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is that good, the price to get him is fine. In 1992, Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf gave up a first-round pick for a 1991 second-round pick named Brett Favre, who was 0-for-5 in his rookie season. Had that happened in today’s environment, Wolf would have been excoriated for the deal in the moment. Nobody would tell you after seeing Favre’s career play out that Wolf overpaid. Nobody will care in a few years about those mid-round picks the Bears gave up for (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky if he’s as good as Pace believes. We’ll see.

It’s likely that (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky will need some time to develop, because he didn’t play much at North Carolina. That’s why it’s a good thing the Bears have Mike Glennon as a buffer, albeit an expensive one. The final verdict on (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky probably won’t come this year, and it certainly shouldn’t be made a few weeks after the draft.

The Bears’ belief in (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky will be a fascinating story line over the next few years. He’s off to a good start, at least.

Is this satire or did you copy and paste this from (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky's mom's Facebook account?

Isn't training camp a glorified game of catch with pissed of d and o lineman who can't touch anyone?

Remember when Devin Hester was going to be the next Steve Smith after a few articles? Or how Jay Cutler had become a man?

Yes.

But it is more about how a wasted trade is somehow the best prospect to come out in the last five years.

I detailed all of this information the day after the draft.

1) He was not overdrafted. He had a better post Combine grade than Mariotta.

2) They did not overpay to move up. It cost them a 4th to move up two spaces to 9 last year for Floyd.

The only valid complaints are whether he is any good and whether there was a need to move up to get him.

The scouts quoted in the article were not known the day after the draft. And were not being quoted then either.

I don't know if (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky will pan out but Pace was far from the only guy who thought he was that good.

The article is poorly written and fantastical but that doesn't mean I disagree with the potential. But that being said it's a facile exercise to tout the "potential" of a first round pick, especially during "rookie minicamp." These kinds of things are self-evident: everyone is excited about the "potential" of their first round picks, so it's not really useful to write about it as if the potential has suddenly increased since the time the guy was drafted.

For sure. He could be great, but it won't be due to the reasons in this article.

I quoted the article because of the high praise from NFL personnel directors. I didn't see this after the draft.

Most I heard thought it was a reach, but a lot of them still had praise for (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky and thought he had potential.

You know the article is so full of shit since there is a dearth of quality QBs and the 49ers widely advertised their openness to trading down.

The only interested party in trading up for this generational QB talent....Bears.

What we were told on the radio last week was the #2 was a reach. It has not been weeded out since the draft that GM's and scouts pretty much universally thought (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky was the best qb prospect.

Find me one article on a first round pick that didn't have a great rookie minicamp.

Not from rookie camp but an article on the 1st day of training camp for a certain Bears 1st rounder:

http://www.sagerstrong.bleacherreport.c ... ining-camp

Over the weekend, the Chicago Bears held one of their first full-contact workouts of the 2012 training camp in Bourbonnais. On Sunday, Bears' head coach Lovie Smith had the third and fourth string players don the full pads and equipment, and put them in a live, full-contact scrimmage.

Shea McClellin was among those participating, and let's just say the first round draft pick got hit with a huge dose of reality. While going up against the offensive linemen that were lower on the depth chart, McClellin got his official rookie wake up call.

The rookie from Boise State was pushed around, knocked down, pancaked and, at various times, just out right brutalized. One would assume that McClellin spent Monday's off-day in the hot tub to heal his wounds.

After yesterday's scrimmage there are some who question if McClellin can truly be an every down defensive end. And there are some who question if the Bears could have made a wiser decision on draft day.

When McClellin was drafted, some Bears fans shook their heads about the pick. Many, including myself, felt that Syracuse defensive end Chandler Jones would have been a better pick. But the Bears opted to take McClellin.

There was the assumption that the Bears saw something that nobody else did. When the rookies had their mini-camp shortly afterwards, Bears' head coach Lovie Smith said that McClellin is ready and capable of being an every down defensive lineman.

While McClellin was listed as a defensive end in college, much of his highlight footage shows him blitzing from the outside or up the middle while lined up as a fourth linebacker. Some say that the Bears should just switch to a 3-4 defense to accommodate Shea McClellin. But I can tell you that the Bears don't plan on doing that anytime soon.

Go bears!

Just a guess, but I don't think he identifies as Polish... if it was "Trubiski" I would buy it

I'm going to give it a chance. The Bears have hurt us worse before. I'm all in and can't wait until training camp starts. I assume you have to play him over Glennon?

No they've stated this is Glendon's year, and who knows after that. I saw a report where even if Glennon gets hurt or fails it's not a guarantee they would throw (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky out there.

They're talking a big game about developing (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky "the right way" but when (not if) this season goes to shit again, I could see Fox throwing him out there like Fisher did with Goff to try to save his own ass.

Okay, didn't know that. Assumed that if Fox is on the hot seat, his best bet is to either make Pace look bad by (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky failing or make himself look good if (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is a success. Plus the guy is high pick and everything that comes with it. Either way though, I'm over all the stupid shit about Pace losing a pick and want to see what this kid can do.
