I'm looking to purchase a couple cheap, high-quality XLR microphones to use for my podcast. I figured with the number of musicians and past media junkies on this board, someone will have a good recommendation.

Don't need anything fancy. Would prefer to stay under $100 total.

The Shure SM48-LC is what I've been using. They are about $40-50/each off Amazon.

The Shure PG58 is also really good. They run about 60 each. AKG used to have a lower cost one too but I'm having trouble finding it.

Already use that when I'm "in-studio." These new mics will be for in the field.

Take the Julie Dicaro approach. Set up a GoFundMe for $4000.

This is the only correct answer.

For $100, Shure SM48 will work.

The sm48 is a classic. And... if you need to hammer some nails you can use it for that too.

How you set the mixer will make a huge difference. Always run your mic a little hot. It will make you sound more important.

make sure you max db levels for 1.6k, 3.2k, 4.8k for deafness inducing mid range.

Sub $100 microphones are usually junk.

What's a good mic to use to replace my laptop mic when I'm doing web-based meetings? I'm starting to work remotely more often, and we've recently replaced our conference call system. I rarely need video, just audio and screen sharing.

Somewhat portable (the size of a Coke can) would be useful.

Logitech 600 is pretty good if you're in a room with little ambient noise.

Blue Snowball might be too big for you.

Logitech C series webcams are very small and have okay mics. Way better than laptop mics.

Buy a headset.

I do have a headset, but i was wondering if there was a better standalone mic for when I'm speaking.

A Shure PG-48 is a cheaper version of a SM-58. It will work, but it is a dynamic mic. All radio shows use condenser mics. The dynamic mics are for sound that comes directly at them such as a vocals, but the mouth has to be directly in front of the mic at all times. The condenser mic pick up more room noise and you do not have to have your mouth directly in front of them in one position at all times. Typically condenser mics also have a different type of clips and different stands than a dynamic mic. For recording a podcast it's best to have an interface that can record the microphones into a program like Audacity. The other thing I would add is that a pop filter is important, so you don't have popping P's when you talk.

I don't think that's true. I know a few personalities use condenser mics (Brehmer an MKH 416 shotgun and Stern a TLM103 or U87), but far and away the industry standard in radio of all formats is still the RE-20/27.

This just isn't true. Condenser or dynamic, almost all commercially available microphones are built to the XLR form factor at the connection point, it's just a matter of whether there's electronics to handle an extra 48 volts riding along one rail. Sure, different types of microphones will have shock mounts built for their purpose, but that is not contingent on whether the mic needs phantom power, and the mounts on any stock or shock mount are standardized.

Julie can't even afford that mic without a second round of funding.
