Any of you computer guys have any thoughts on what the best protection software is for a home PC? Are there any that are better values than others (or even free? :) ) Does the standard Mcafee still work well or is that outdated?

I never run any anti-virus software, which my paranoid, IT executive wife finds absolutely insane. First, I don't want programs that minimally ask me a million questions before allowing me to use my machine in the manner in which I desire and at worst refuse to allow me to use it at all. Second, viruses are always ahead of anti-virus software anyway. I've gotten viruses despite running Norton and McAfee. Finally, I simply don't trust anti-virus software and I truly believe these companies are themselves responsible for many viruses.

That final point caused a huge argument with my wife wherein she acted as if I was some tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist. I responded by saying, "Wait a minute. John McAfee lived in a jungle brothel with four teenage hookers and murdered his next door neighbor, but you have a difficult time believing it's possible that he might create viruses to further the market for his signature software?"

I also don't use any always on Anti-Virus software. It gets annoying.

I find that not downloading viruses, malware, keyloggers and other such bullshit is the best method to keep my PC's free of viruses.

I do not pay for any AV and have no problems. I use a combination of CCleaner, Spybot and Malware Antibytes. All free and run them once in a while.

This guy gets it.

It's fairly easy to tell when you come across something you should not be clicking or downloading, and any of these other free programs should pick up and remove any trash you acquire along the way.

I can't believe computer wizard IMU hasn't shared his expertise with the group.

my favorite thing about antiviruses is when they "detect a threat" in some warez [read: ARRRRR IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS computer software] crack/patch/workaround for, say, microsoft windows activation [keys].... you know, like say your brother's legit OEM windows install gets nuked by a cataclysmic HD failure, and when he gets a new HD and it's time to get windows back up and running the easiest way is just to grab a torrent of the win 8.1 pro ISO, so you do that and when it's time to use the included-activation-crack/patch your Norton Security goes WHOA WHOA WHOAAAA NOOOOO!!!! VIRUS! MALWARE! SECURITY THREAT!!! TROJAN.GEN.2 IN THE HOUSE!!! [not to be confused with Gentoo like, say, the unix/linux distro or whatever, but you know GENERAL TROJAN #2, aka "we dont know what this is.... BUT IT'S BAD "DELETE! DELETE! DELETE!" - broken matt hardy"

so then said brother is FREAKED THE FUCK OUT cuz it's coming up as a VIRUS!!!!! [oh no] but hey windows seems to work just fine with the key in the text file, so now over a year later out of nowhere it's like ACTIVATE WINDOWS BY JUNE 16 [OR "HERE GO HELL COME!!!!" - Tran] and he's basically leaning on you like WAT DO?!!?!? so you go and get the industry-standard windows-activator for him and hey whaddya know, once you extract the thing norton jumps all over it like SECURITY RISK!!!! IT'S DELETED NOW!!! TROJAN.GEN.2 BACK IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!11

....and then you realize that these antivirus/security companies are in bed with microsoft/software-industry to make sure that [most likely] just about any crack/patch/registration-program comes up as a "trojan" so that way the straightlaced-casuals amongst us end up getting freaked out when they see that every conceiveable way to get microsoft off their ass comes with the threat of imminent virus/trojan so they end up getting frustrated and doling out $100+ to microsoft to get a new proper windows 8.1 pro key [along with some kind of bullshit that probably loads up your computer and readies it to go up to windows 10 ASAP, cuz you know one of the sly "features" of windows 10 is that microsoft rigged up a way for ppl with windows 8/ish machines [who didnt turn off auto/updates] to have their computers subtly download ~15-25GB worth of windows 10 upgrades all unannounced in the background, then at some point [when you're likely asleep or not paying attention] windows could be like OH YEAH HEY WE GOT WINDOWS 10 UPGRADE!!! FREE!!! YOU WANNA INSTALL THAT, RIGHT?!? WELL HEY WE'RE GONNA RESTART YOUR COMPUTER TO BEGIN THE UPGRADE IN 60 SECONDS UNLESS YOU HIT CANCEL SO JUST SIT BACK RELAX AND STRAP IT DOWN!!!"

and BLAM.... next thing you know you're forever a part of the fashionable windows 10 botnet because, you know, microsoft has a vested interest in you keeping current with windows cuz [ask little miss Reality Winner! she'll tell you! =]

TLDR = antiviruses are lame programs for lame people. just suppress any and all innate[ly-stupid] OOOH MUST CLICK genes and do basic browser security with an internet firewall and you prolly wont catch any horrible viruses or anything. and if you ever do THEN get some anti-virus/malware deal and get rid of it

for what it's worth: only virus i ever got in all my years of barebacking was "the tai pei virus" which was a little benign deal that added ~400 bytes to every [DOS] .exe file just to kind of see how far it could go. this would only be an issue if you had an application [usually a proper computer game] that did a CRC check [cyclic reduncency check..... check! you know, as redundant as saying "ATM machine" =] where it wants to make sure the .exe file is the exact same size that it's supposed to be.....

...and oh yeah in terms of malware i ONCE got that "windows defender" aka "that one anti-virus thingy" malware, you know, the one that gets into your computer through exploiting web browsers / java / javascript / activeX-through-internet-explorer and then buries itself deep into your registry ~10 times over, creating three different little .exe files named something like barjjs8ff.exe in c:\windows\system32\brf8s9dafoids5sj\" and then if you fail to only delete 1/3 or 2/3 of those .exe files the remaining one/s will recreate the other 2 .exe files and bury them even deeper in your windows stuff....... and oh yeah, it'll THEN make sure that you cant download ad-aware or malwarebytes [literally looking for those install .exe file filenames to be downloaded and it'll delete them on the spot, then when it notices you're doing that it'll change .exe files to open up in web browsers instead of, you know, running as .exe files...... ALL WHILE CONSTANTLY POPPING UP THESE AD WINDOWS SAYING "HEY WE'VE DETECTED MALWARE ON YOUR SYSTEM... CLICK HERE TO GET OUR WINDOWS DEFENDER ANTI-VIRUS [FOR ONLY $19.99] AND GET RID OF THIS EVIL MALWARE!!!" --- nice racket they got going there, eh? #SkynetISTheVirus caliber stuff for sure =P

TLDR TLDR = yeah srsly, unless you're a total idiot who 100.0% neglects common sense [web browser / ] internet security you're probably not gonna get any non-NSA malware, or ESPECIALLY viruses or trojans [the latter being malicious computer programs that don't focus on spreading/reproducing as much as they do JUSTing [fucking your shit up] you good and proper

Forrest Gump wrote:
i reckon sini wants me to say AND THAT'S ALL I'VE GOT TO SAY ABOUT THAT, however that fucker wore me out with his TLDR bullshit so i'm just gonna say "life is like a box of chocolates..... sometimes you just gotta cram it in to your fat face nonstop cuz HOLY SHIT YOU NEVER STOP DO YOU!?!?!"

8) 8) 8)

/me sleeps easy knowing that this one [relatively-wanton/oldschool] TLDR post will now fuel his "fan club" for saying SINI = NORSE GOD OF TLDR for at least a whole 'nother year, even tho 95%+ of my posts are [refreshingly] succinct and "normal" by C/S/FMB standards #CestLaMe, No?
