Not one host watches the games (Sox and Cubs) with as much detail as Murph does. Plus he knows more about basbeall than any host as well.

He gives the most unbiased break down of each teams games.

I agree. He's second to none when diving into in game baseball situations. I think he knows baseball better than anybody in Chicago media. Including Stone. I've said that before.

Boers and Drinky hate him. Drinky had a bad time working as Murph's producer. Look, I'm sure he's been hard on producers. But hey, everybody here has been chewed out by their boss. These producers are no different than anybody in the work place. Hell, maybe these producers deserve to be chewed out sometimes.

Larry has given Murph compliments. I remember producer Cy said that Murph's the only reason he got a producing job at the Score. There are always two sides.

I'm sure it's fun working for B&B. It always seems like it's party time for Goff and Drinky. Goff and Drinky are allowed to bust B&B's chops on the air. Goff hops on the air whenever he wants. Some hosts don't allow their producers to do that. Bernsie and Boers are secure and don't feel threatened. Bernsie can carry the show without any help from producers. Rock and Jen Jen have a fun time with Pappy and his show sucks because it's just a party and Pappy doesn't demand anything from them.

Maybe Murph wants things done a certain way for his show. Maybe he's right to get on his producers every now and then. I'm also sure he's chewed them out without good cause. Like I said, so have many bosses in many industries.

I don't mind Murph during baseball season, and I think the two hour format fits him pretty well. He's a tough listen during football season, and I agree that much of the act is stale. But just talking baseball, he's fine by me.

I'm unable to listen to him in his 12-2 slot for the most part. I used to like listening to him when he did evenings. He'd have an hour before the night baseball games would start. Plus it was fun to hear him break down the Cubs day game that I missed. I'm not even a Cubs fan. I know many Cubs fans love Murph. Especially the old timers.

Yeah. He's obviously not as good of a listen when it's not baseball season. He does get some good guests for the Bears season. He does raise some interesting topics sometimes too. Even when it's not baseball season.

Back in 1993 I thought Murph was a fun listen (especially the 30-45 minute shit shifts he would get before the transmitter was powered down) - I was even the last caller of the day with him a few times. But 15 years later, his show hasn't matured.

I remember him in the early days. He was much more happier then. He has gotten bitter over the years. Shows are much more angry. He seems more high strung and sensitive too. I'm sure the ongoing Boers feud contributed to this. Mac and Boers constantly ripped on him. Boers continues to this day.

That probably leads to tense relationships at the station. If Murph sees you're friends with Boers it probably means you're his enemy.

Murph is sandwiched between Mully/Hanley and Bernsie/Boers. He had a falling out with both shows. So he probably shows up, does his show, and leaves. Only talking to his producers. Everybody jokes about him avoiding B&B. But he also has to avoid Mully and Hanley too.

He has no one but himself to blame for the Mulli and Hanley thing. He was a complete prick.

He might be a complete prick in general, but I'm willing to believe that Terry Boers is enough of an asshole that he'd go out of his way to piss Murph off on purpose. I don't really believe that about Mulli and Hanley though. Plus we have the tape on that one.

i couldnt care less about how he gets along with b & b or m & h. all i want is sports talk, and thats all he does. i get enough giggle-fest from the other shows.

I have been a charter member of the Murph Ass Licking Society on this board. He has a solid show. It is one of the few programs that follow the original mission of the SCORE.

I don't care how he treats producers. I don't care about his feuds. What I do care about is local shows being "the voice of the fan". In a sports radio landscape that is quickly becoming nationalized before our eyes, Murph stands out against the trend.

Many on here choose to criticise him. I think the greatest testament to his skill is that those same people must also recognize that the guy gets listeners and has gotten listeners for 16 years in time slots ranging from night to mornings. There should always be a spot for a guy like Murph in Chicago sports radio

I do give Murph a listen more often than not. Part of that is because of the lackluster competition in his spot. The other is he typically stays relevant with topics. My issue with Murph (and the time to turn him off) is when he tends to spend way too much time on topics and all the damn drops. He must have spent 2 hours total on M/T this week talking about Sam Zell and selling the naming rights. Important? sure. Deserving half of his available time for two days? Nah.

The drops get to the point that you have to turn him off because you know he's going to overwhelm you with them.

If ESPN had a solid local show during that slot, I'd be listening to 1000. But Mike fucking Tirico has one of the lamest shows around.

We are talking about the guy who called Jacque Jones a loser -- an extremely objective observation. Murphy used all of his vast baseball knowledge to come up with this theory.
I remember listening to Murphy's shows with Stone. I never came away with the thought that Mike had a better grasp on baseball. I remember Mike whining when Stone teed him up for the Jones statement.
His show resonates with Cubs fans, because he is usually expressing their thoughts.
I'm not a Cubs fan, so he is a little too whiny for my taste. As a Sox fan, I can sense the subjectivity in his voice. It's just hard for me to listen to Mike debate White Sox issues. I just can't stomach listening to someone criticize the White Sox when HIS TEAM IS LESS THAN PERFECT. When the Cubs WIN A WORLD SERIES, I'll be willing to listen to Murphy talk about both organizations.
I still enjoy many of his segments, and I can understand the reasons for his popularity. He deserves a slot on the station -- more than Mike North.

I never said that White Sox fans don't listen to show -- or even like it. I just don't care for the way he couches some things.
I loved his segments with Piersall. Murphy has SOME knowledge about sports. He's not an idiot. I believe he should've appeared at the UC before North. I consider him to much more of a radio icon then Mikey. It's kind of slap in the face. Murphy's show has pretty much stayed the same over the years, it's just that he's grown to be a lot more crotchety. The funny thing is that he appears to take this angst out on Mulli or B and B. The anger should be aimed directly at Pappy. Wherever they put Murphy, he appears to draw decent numbers. I'm pretty sure his morning ratings were better than the MNMS. I believe that Murphy's morning show would outdraw Mike and Mike.

Must have been listening to another broadcast when B and B trashed South Siders for disliking Manuel for his lack of fire and passion.
They didn't go after the Sox fans who ran onto the field, accosted base coaches or eluded security guards. "We ain't no white trash". I forgot that drop was part of Murph's daily show.
Yes, they do make fun of the trash-throwing Cubs fans -- which is deserved.

Just finished listening to Murphy's Blackhawk-themed show.
Why?
The Blackhawks are 11th in their conference. He finishes talking some exciting audio. I guess it's nice that Crawford recorded his first shutout -- in his first game (I believe), but I wouldn't consider that exciting.
Watching Ovechkin race up the single-season, goal-scoring is exciting.
Sounds like Murph was playing company man today.
As for Murph not dealing in B.S. Someone must have forgotten about his 20-plus minute rant about it appears that more than half of the city of Chicago "hates" Ron Santo.
Don't forget "Jacque Jones is a loser".

the other day i flipped on AM100 during murph commercials, and tirico and tafoya were just going on and on about lebron versus kobe. THAT is "mailin'-it-in" radio. it wasn't just a segment, either, it was segment after segment after segment. that show is hard to stomach sometimes. at least murph keeps it moving, he is on a schedule, and he packs in a lot each day. whether it be good opinions, bad opinions, or stupid opinions, he keeps the show going.

In this period of "there's nothing going on in Chicago sports" and while other hosts are "mailing it in", to use a popular phrase, or conducting worthless giggle-fests on the air, Murph is at least TRYING to come up with angles and topics worthy of the fans' interest. He watches the games and he looks for things both on and off the field that impact us, the paying customers. For example, I'm not even a Cubs fan, but I think there's a LOT going on with this Sam Zell/Tribune/Wrigley Field stuff that has a bearing on the future of Chicago baseball and no one else can seem to break out of their usual mold to address it. That might take a little work. It's easier to just put on a call from some meatball who thinks Tyrus Thomas has more upside than Kobe Bryant and laugh at him or to try and enthrall us with behind-the-scenes crap about your stupid high school assistant coaching gig.

I'll say it loud, I'll say it proud--and yes, I've made fun of him and his goofy sound effects and drops--give me Murph. He can be corny but it's sports talk--repeat, SPORTS talk--with some effort behind it and a minimum of "it's all about me."

I have to say that I didn't like Murphy's show in the mornings or at night, but I do agree with you on your main point. He does talk sports, unlike the guys who think they are "stars". MJH has turned into a jerkoff fest, North, well what can one say about that moron. If Murph talks sports, he's at leat doing what he should be doing. Not movie trivia, movie reviews, political talk and cooking tips with AB meat.
