Going to my first one tomorrow. Is it a rule that they have to be at least 50 miles away from your school?

Thanks for any tips.

I did cross country my sophomore year in high school the happiest day of that fall was the day the trainer sent me to an orthopedist to have my knee looked at as it was bugging me slightly. Well, maybe second happiest besides the doctor telling me I was out 3 months if I selected rehab over surgery.

But good god the meets sucked.

being a runner i find cross country to be more interesting than most but, my daughter runs and we really enjoy it. one of the advantages is the relatively short season. They only compete for about 7-8 weeks in my neck of the woods and it isn't as tedious as the never-ending basketball/baseball/softball seasons. Also, the meets are pretty quick. we know what time she lines up, the gun goes off, and usually inside an hour we are out of there when you take into account the warmup, the race, and the cool down. it is not an all-day investment. the main drawback is that there is only one home meet per season, so pretty much every meet is out of town and out in the sticks where i live we have a couple that are an hour or more away.

really is a shame cook county doesn't have any large park areas you could run a 2 mile race in.

My senior year we had the city championship in Washington Park near the lagoon right after a flood. They'd already marked the course and didn't want to change. It was a blast running on really an uneven course in what was warm water. And just 8 blocks from school.

And even more fun to watch novices fall.

I think our furthest meet was around Niles

When I was on the golf team, we always felt bad watching those kids running the course while we were golfing, eating candy bars and drinking soda.

We used to run there all the time. Great course.

Isn't Bullfrog Lake in Cook County? May not be.

Our home course was a 1.5 mile loop. Varsity ran it twice while JV had an inner .5 mile loop they ran. It wasn't bad.

I've always thought the pity cheering for the slowest kids to finish was embarrassing.

Yes but this was for Catholic schools...(?)

was kind of boring but we left after my son's race as he had another activity. not sure that is proper decorum. otherwise we'd have to stay for like 5 hours doing nothing.

Yeah that was the one. Interestingly, my kids attend Catholic school. But the hypocrisy doesn't stop there--my son is playing travel baseball. And lacrosse. As a sidenote, I had to park down a side street for the meet and saw a guy working on his motorcycle in the driveway with a confederate flag hanging in his garage. I wanted to take a picture but it probably wasn't the best idea.

It's really way the fuck out there. I figured I was smart and parked my car on the opposite side of the park. problem was the race was in the way and we couldn't get to the car without cutting through the race. being my first meet and all I didn't want to do that. I started to go all the way around the neighborhood but there's a fucking lake in the way! Stopped a cop and asked the shortest route back to my car. Guy said, "I'll just give you a ride." It would've been like 2-3 mile walk!

I fucking love cops.

Mine youngest did Cross Country for 3 years. It is amazing how fast they actually go. My fastest 5k in the past few years was 30:38. His fastest is 15:08. I cant run 200 yards at that pace. I would try and pick a spot in the course where I can yell to him, then be there for the finish. Most of the meets the girls would run first, i was shocked at some of the mothers actually running next to there daughters shouting supportive words, but doing it in an angry fashion. The meets are boring but quick, unlike high school girls soccer.

Season is over now. My son usually finished around 35 out of 110. Not bad but not exactly setting the world on fire. Was kind of hoping this would be his "thing" to be good at.

15:08 for a 5K, does that get you a medal or something? jeez.

Wow- I didn't realize HS kids average 5 min miles. Back when I used to run I would do a 10 K at a 7:30 pace and I thought I was really doing something.

15:08 is pretty fast. I ran a 16:03 as my best. Each course was different, and you never knew if it was truly 3 miles or not. Part of the home field advantage. Cross country was fun, I did it to get in shape for basketball and ended up pretty decent at it.

15:08 For three miles would place you 60th in state in the highest class last year. A 15:08 5k would convert to around 14:37 which would place you around 12th in state. The best kid this year broke 14 minutes last Saturday for three miles.

You cannot become truly elite without the talent and the right body. It won't matter how hard you work. Granted, to become truly elite you have work hard too.
