Ryan Baker, who has been a sports anchor at NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5 since 2003, is jumping to CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2.

Starting April 14, he will anchor sports for Channel 2's weekday morning newscast and report for other newscasts on the station.

Baker is better than Jim Rose and more 'authentic' in his tone than the 70s mustache guy at channel 2.. so I have no bad words for him.. he is excercising his options to maximize earnings as a worker in the free market,

I wonder if this means Paula Farris gets the lead anchor job at NBC 5. I'm pretty sure that would make her the first women in Chicago to be lead sports anchor.

Or maybe they go get somebody from another market. You know Peggy and Adamle won't get it.

They should give it to Paula. She's easy on the eyes and actually knows sports. She really is solid. She'll get the majority of guys watching her sports cast at 10:20. I'm pretty sure of that.

If I'm thinking of the right guy.....

Is Ryan Baker the brother of Lovie Smith ?

I thought Baker was just OK. I never saw much of any emotion or personality in his reports. For lack of a better term, as a broadcaster, he was pretty vanilla.

Only if she conducts it dressed in suggestive clothing sitting on a hood of a classic custom painted Camaro or Corvette. Think Whitesnake video.

Who is he? More to the point, who watches local sports? Aren't their ratings lower than the food channel? In a population of over 8 million in the Chicago area, the nightly news and sports from all the stations combined gets less than 10% of the audience. Less than one in ten of us is watching any of the local garbage. I wouldn't know Ryan Baker from Ryan Simmons.

From Chicago Magazine:
In May 1988, for example, approximately 1.3 million Chicago-area households were tuning in each night to the 10 p.m. newscasts of Chicago's three network affiliates (WBBM, WLS, and WMAQ), according to an analysis of Nielsen data from that period. Nowadays there is a fourth ten-o'clock local newscast, that of Fox-Channel 32. Last May, the four stations' combined viewership for the ten-o'clock news came to 799,000 households—a 38-percent decline from the May 1988 total.

I hope Jeff Blanzy follows him.

I watch NBC 5 hoping to get the teaming of a Ginger Zee with a Paula Faris. I'm pretty sure they talk too, but I really don't know what they say.

While I don't think Mark Malone, that guy with the freaky balding hair on Channel 9, Rich King, the kid that just riched puberty on Channel 9, Blanzy, Jim Rose, Adamle, Cheverini, Jill Carlson, Peggy Kusinski or Ryan Baker are that great - who do you think should replace them? Bruce Wolf was pretty brutal if you ask me too. He seemed like it was 'beneath' him to be a TV sports anchor.

I think Waddle could handle a M-F sports anchor position with NO problem whatsoever.

Channel 2 or 9 to me is like going to an Aurora cable access show.

Channel 5's sports coverage is an out and out joke. Revolving hosts with Peggy Kusinski, Ryan Baker, Mike Adamle and Paula Farris are admissable at best.

Channels 32 and 7 are the only one's worth watching to me, and part of the reason is that the sports anchors (Giangreco / McPherrin) are strong.

Channel 2 is SUCH an afterthought to me, I couldn't even remember who 'backed' up Mark Malone.

Howard Sudberry and his oddly undersized teeth and Megan Mawicke.

Keep them too...

The perfect night is Anna Davlantes anchoring, Lauren Jiggets as the lead reporter on the biggest story of the night, Ginger Zee on weather and Paula Ferris on sports. Thats by far the best local talent show in Chicago.
