No, I think I'm fine. If you don't like something I say, you don't have to reply. If you can't take a joke by now, its a lost cause.

So, if you don't care about a subject, it's ok to post over and over about it but if you don't care about someone else's opinion is, you shouldn't "fucking comment". It seems like you're drawing an awfully thin line here.

No, BR. Different issues entirely. I don't see the relevance. Oh, and I'm not crying about it. I was just offering a detached opinion.

The complaint seems to be that Teddy Greenstein and MJH now have a personal on air relationship that will lead to future bias in rating their performance.

Now let's switch the roles. Silvy and Waddle have the job to critique the Bears. They are to the Bears what Greenstein is to MJH. Now that Silvy and Waddle have spent hours with Tillman on air are they going to be more inclined to be easy on Tillman?

If Greenstein will be influenced by having a personal on air relationship with a person who he is supposed to critique wouldn't Silvy and Waddle be influenced by having a personal on air relationship with a person who they are supposed to critique.

Let's go back to the SAT's.

Teddy Greenstein is to MJH as Silvy and Waddle are to Peanut Tillman.

You seem pretty froggy today.
I was referring to Franks critique of other's desires to post their opinions. NSJ if I have to explain myself to you wiht every post this is going to take up my whole day.

BR, Greenstein's job has been, partly, to critique and evaluate the Sproting Media, and since he is reporting it under the umbrella of a newspaper (not under the heading of Editorial) he is assuming a certain amount of objectivity.
The radio hosts are not "critics" of the players. They're there simply to talk about it.
There's a difference there.

Frank, did you take a stupid pill today?
I came after you for your assumption that this is not worthy of conversation, and opined that if you had no opinion, there is no point in you going after people's opinions that they choose to post.
I DO have an opinion on the matter. The fact that I KEEP REPEATING is that I have no personal stake in the matter, like MJH and North do. Greenstein ain't going after me, or judging me.
Christ man, use your 10% a little better.

So which is it? You have an opinion or you don't care? I don't care, and this is a silly thread and a silly argument. If you agree, fine. If not, I couldn't care less.

Thanks for the thoughts, Mac. I think there is a big difference between sportswriters supplementing their income in broadcasting (Comcast Tribune Live) and reporters working for and with the people they are assigned to cover (Teddy G, Bruce Levine). This may be a simple matter to you, but for some of us old J schoolers, the erosion of journalist ethics isn't something we necessarily accept quite so easily. It's not a big deal to me. I just think it's unfortunate for the Trib, Teddy and their readers that the Trib now accepts conflicts of interest among their columnists/critics. I wonder if the next step for the Trib will be for John Kass to go to work for the Mayor.?

Why does it matter if you are a fan of the show or not?
Teddy G. has zero influence on who I listen to or read or watch.

Right Coast. That's what I think too. It is different than newspaper guys doing radio. This is Teddy's beat. It's a clear conflict of interest. Teddy should value his credibility with his readers more. I understand that it's only the "Sports media beat." It's not that important.

Still, when Teddy got the offer to host MJH, his natural inclination should have been to refuse it. The Tribe's natural response should be to not allow Teddy to do it.

Instead, I'll bet Teddy didn't even hesitate when he agreed. I'll bet he didn't even think to ask permission from his Trib bosses. Plus, I'll bet his trib bosses don't really care.

The world won't come to an end. But there should be some pride in a reporter. He should know when he is compromising his journalistic integrity.

If I am on the Cubs beat and they ask me to "spend a day as a ballplayer", ride the team bus, take BP, sit in the dugout, etc.

Would I be compromising my objectivity or getting a great, exclusive insight into my subject matter?

It would only be valuable insight if you got to bang the ball players bitches. Otherwise, the readers would learn nothing from you striking out in batting practice.

Why do you think the Bush administration was so in favor of "imbedded" reporters during the invasion of Iraq? Do you think it was so they'd have better insight or do you suppose they thought the reporters would be more inclined to sing the praises of our military operations?

To throw my two cents into the ring, I don't have a problem with Teddy G co-hosting on MJH. I don't read the trib and I didn't even know he performs as their media critic until I read it on this board. I just consider him the college football writer from the trib. But I just have a couple of questions:

1) Since he is a part-time media critic, does that mean he shouldn't appear as a guest on MJH's show or any other sports talk radio show since it might comprimise his integrity or objectivity. What if he likes appearing on one show more than the other? Should he only be a guest during college football season?

2) Isn't appearing on Chicago Tribune Live as a co-host / guest the same as co-hosting on MJH? That show is covered under sports media, is it not? Do people have a problem with him being on that show (I should say that I never watch that show but based on some of the responses in this thread that Teddy G has appeared on it)?

Chicago Tribune Live is different. The Trib owns that show. So Trib employees get to be on it. We know what it is. It's in the title - Chicago Tribune Live. That's his employer.

Of course Teddy won't blast that show in his column. Just like he won't blast his fellow reporters and columnist that write for his paper. That's understood.

Radio guys get away with blasting their station. It's kind of a shtick. Stern started it. Others have followed it. It's done in the name of entertainment. Listeners like to hear the host blast their management and co workers. It's just not done in the newspaper industry.

That's why everybody at ESPN 1000 is allowed to call Silvy gay. You'll never see periodical columns where Marriotti is ripping on Telender.

Are you being a Critic or a Writer?
Is Teddy G. writing about sports radio or being a media critic about it?
My point is that all sports writers are critics and just b/c TG has "media critic" as a temporary title does not mean he is losing journalistic integrity by being on a show he mentions once a year when someone is suspended.

Say Richard Roeper gets a call from a Director. "We'd like you to have a cameo in our film". He takes the roll
6 months later it's time to critique the movie. If he goes on about it being the best movie he's ever seen, do you trust his objectivity?
I mean come on. Roeper writes editorials too and columns and political stuff right?

that is a very good point darkside. but i think its different because roper only reviews the movie once. teddy greenstien isnt going to be reviewing the ONE show he did for the next 3 years.

And that is also an excellent buckeye. He's going to be reviewing not just the show he did, but the overall show over the course of the time he's the media critic. Everytime he goes to maybe slam Mac over the latest "bitch" flap, he might take it eays thinking, "Well, maybe I'll get another chance to host if I play this just right."
