Better than those hokey Broadway shows eveybody gets so excited about. It is set in 1890s Chicago which I found to be more inneresting. Show features many RATS!

Take your wife.

Please.

I dunno, doesn't a premier ballet company like the Joffrey have a responsibility to play it straight? Localizing the Nutcracker sounds like something St. Louis would do.

well, you gotta shake it up. can't expect the same 5000 people to come see the same thing year after year after year....I much preferred it to their old version.

I saw the Joffrey production in high school when I was dating some girl way out of my league. A few weeks earlier I went to the Cardinal Stritch Dinner because she was a debutante and I had to rent a tux. Never seen a ballet before, it was pretty good.

So my wife would watch this collection of nutcracker performances on ovation or Bravo in the past and there were some really bizarre ones. The ones that weren’t straight up traditional were kind of cool but it was either Paris or Nice that would do some really bizarre shit. Music was still nice.

There's a version called The Nutblacker where instead of taking Clara to watch Russian dancers and Chinese dancers, they just watch Tyler Perry movies and go to family reunions, and instead of the Rat King, well, he's still called the Rat King, but now it's just a Korean guy.

And it’s an especially notable achievement given that setting this ballet at Chicago’s greatest moment of triumph could easily have come off as pandering or hubristic.

Hadn't the Joffrey been "playing it straight" for decades? What's wrong with rewriting a classic from a new perspective? Do you object to modernist or ostmodernist literature on the same grounds?
