I can't decide if being a phenom for a few years means he should be in the HoF ... seems the only real analog to baseball's HoF DH deal.

I thought he had retired after last season.

Meh.

Flash-in-the-pan to be sure, but I think he merits more than a "m'eh" ... when he was rolling, he was a must-see attraction.

If he hadn't tried to play offense, he might be a hall of famer, but, his offensive "prowess" coupled with how shitty he got at returns kills that credential, IMO.

Did he really get shitty at returns, or did the rule changes have a negative effect on his numbers? Nearly all kickoffs end up being a touchback now, that probably cut his scoring chances in half in the later stage of his career.

I honestly believe that the Hall of fame means something entirely something different to under 35 - 40 year old crowd.

20 touchdowns isn't THAT special imo

An argument can be made he is the reason the rule was changed in the first place.

20 return touchdowns is a record tho.

He'll never be able to match the special teams talent that Josh Bellamy possesses.

In my HOF.

His first two years were on another level of kick returns that have never been seen before.

Correct, which is the reason I consider him at least worthy of discussing being inducted.

Thanks that was awesome. It was the first football season after I moved here. I was just watching on tv thinking no chance we win and then for a while there was a chance.

How many times did he try and make chicken salad out of chicken shit when he had come far enough along that he should have recognized when it was time to hold back a hair.

It's almost like the more he learned about return patterns, the worse he got at them...his rookie season was literally him running like Forrest Gump without a real thought in his head.

Also, negative points for "Devin Hester: Wide Receiver"

At his position, no one could really do it any better.

He isn't going into the HoF as a WR or DB. He is going in as a kick returner. As he should.

He should be at least a semi-finalist for a HOF discussion as a KR/PR. Don't know if he deserves to actually make the HOF, however.

I still remember near the beginning of that experiment where Mushin Mohammed (sp?) was literally lining Devin up on the line of scrimmage, and directing where he needed to go. Devin might be the dumbest guy to ever put on a football helmet, but he was definitely talented in the return game.

Just like Forrest Gump.

I remember the 2 minute drill in Philly when Griese and Mohammed were literally telling Hester where to stand so he didn't jump the snap.

Terrell Owens leads the list of guys more deserving but still not in, and fwiw, Brian Mitchell was a better football player.

Damning with faint praise.... Would absolutely be the #1 WR on the bears right now. He would look like AJ Green next to these fucks.

The problem I have with that concept is that some positions (i.e., special teams) are usually fallbacks for guys that aren't good enough to be a starter at another position. Deion Sanders was an elite cornerback who happened to also run back kicks. It's why relievers in baseball, no matter how good, find it hard to make the HoF.
