Huh? You must associate yourself with some really dumb Cubs fans. The consensus from all the Cubs fans I know is that they are appreciative of Fowler for his time with the Cubs and they understand that he took the best deal out there. The Cubs did not offer anywhere near the money the Cards gave him. There are absolutely no hard feelings at all with Fowler.

Also from the same thread;

Oh, and fuck Dexter Fowler. If you don't hate him already then you're a beta Cubs fan. I don't know what to tell you.

Well whoever said that is an absolute idiot. Besides, a couple dumb asses on this forum doesn't represent a consensus of Cub fans.

It didn't see minor league deal on ESPN. 4 mil is a solid signing for a #5 starter.

Less than the 8-10 you would have given him, I think he sucks..Id take 2 AAA guys over him and have them split the 160 shitty innings he gives ya for less dough.

Pretty sure I just said he was an end of the rotation option if the Cubs didn't like the price for Cobb. I am not going to pretend that I have watched much Doug Fister but I will listen to the guys on Fangraphs (Dave Cameron to be specific) when they project him to be a good value and back it up with some stats. That 8-10 M was a number on that site.

LHP Mike Minor to the Rangers

The Rangers might set a record for signing FA pitchers this year. That pitching staff was atrocious last year and they traded away a ton of minor leaguers in recent years. Chasing pitching is not a place you want to be.

Not to be a smart ass but isn't that the Cubs' model? Draft all those position players and sign pitching.

The Cubs had a combination of good moves and incredible luck when it comes to the starters that won the World Series. They signed Lester when he was available though most fans and writers would have said it was a year too early to make such a move. They got the guy they wanted and it was a smart move. They got wildly lucky with Arrieta who wasn't the key man in that trade and who no one thought would be as good as he turned out. You look at the true ace number ones and they are pretty much all guys who were highly regarded and drafted very early by their own teams. Arrieta was an exception for a guy like that. Hendricks was another guy who wasn't the key man in a trade. I'm pretty sure Theo didn't think he was getting Greg Maddux. But you need some luck in putting a team together. The chances of finding guys that turn out to be Arrieta and Hendricks they way the Cubs did are very slim.

Yes but like you say they had a model. They traded for young controllable pitchers and signed veterans with a long history of health. The Rangers minor league system is very depleted so it’s doubtful they can swing a trade for a young impact arm so they are just going to piecemeal a staff together thru free agency hoping they’re good enough to let the offense out score the other team. It’s a risky proposition to say the least.

Arrieta kind of reminds me of Ryan Dempster. Tossed aside after arm surgery, picked up by the Cubs. After huge success as a closer, the Cubs moved him to a SP position and made Kerry Wood the closer.
Ryan proceeded to have a great career as a starter for the Cubs. He kind of came out of nowhere, too.

It's nearly impossible to do. Teams just don't trade those pitchers. Hopefully the Sox got one in Kopech, but they had to give up a guy who actually is that type of pitcher to get him.

The Padres acquired 3B Chase Headley and RHP Bryan Mitchell for OF Jabari Bush

This is what the White Sox should do. Get a prospect for taking on a bad contract. There are still a bunch of options out there. Ellsbury, Kemp, Markakis, Choo and half the Dodgers pitching staff to name a few.

The Cardinals have acquired OF Marcell Ozuna from the Marlins.

The Cardinals have finally been able to make a trade. No word on the return but I feel sorry for the poor bastards.

Ian Kinsler to the Angels....maybe.

Eppler is doing more work but he has to do something about that pitching staff before they run out of players to trade.

The A's traded INF Yairo Munoz and Max Schrock to the Cardinals for OF Stephen Piscotty

Odd trade. First Billy Boy is actually acquiring a player and second he isn’t just a one dimensional player (power). Maybe ole Billy is finally trying something new.

The Phillies signed 1B Carlos Santana to a 3yr/$60M deal

Looks like the Fightens think they’re ready to compete. They better start finding some arms.

The Angels sign Zack Cozart to a 3 yr contract.

Just give Billy Eppler the executive of the year award right now. Cozart will play 3B to form one hell of a left side devense. They still need some arms but the Angels are going to be fun to watch.
