The app's best function is definitely its ability to re-route when accidents occur. Definitely saves a lot of time.

But I've noticed during normal morning and afternoon commutes that the routes Waze plans are becoming more and more ridiculous. They have me zig zagging side streets to save 2 minutes rather than take the straight shot of 94 or 90/294. I've also begun to automatically add 5 minutes to the ETA as its consistently adding time to the ETA from my original commute start.

The developers need to incorporate an option that allows me to select the most direct route if the time savings isn't more than 5-10 minutes.

Anyone noticing similar trend?

I love the app, I use it every single day but you are correct about the routes changing. I don't want to switch to 'shortest distance' because then it wont re-route around traffic jams but its getting crazy on "shortcuts" to save time.

I haven't noticed an issue with ETA, it has been fairly accurate as usual.

When I was in Portland, this app was borderline unusable due to a HUGE delay in geolocating. Outside of that, I've been a huge fan since 2012 or so.

During normal driving times or long road trips I've found it's spot on. Especially during afternoon rush hour I've noticed Waze has consistently added 5-8 minutes during the drive from its initial ETA. Not a big deal as it's still the best directions app out there.

I too am a BIGFAN. But yes some of the route changes have gotten a bit wacky lately. I generally just ignore them. And I have always thought their ETA estimates are a bit optimistic. Sometimes I find myself racing just so I can meet (or even beat) the estimate

This, and I get real time traffic and re-routing with it as well.

If you have an Android phone try dumping your GPS cache. Android cheats and uses known cell towers/wifi connections to augment the GPS function. When you travel your phone wants to try and find those familiar info sources, and since it can't it just spazzes the fuck out. Had it happen to me in Seattle.

Here is some guides:
https://lifehacker.com/5873007/how-can- ... crappy-gps
https://www.technobezz.com/fix-android-gps-issues/

I use the GPS toolbox app and it works great.

Google bought Waze and uses most of the Waze technology in the Google Maps app.

But Waze, as far as I know, still has the police callouts and such which Google did not have last I used it.

Don't drive like a complete asshole, and you don't need police callouts.

Nope. I told you the reason traffic exists.

Pre-2000 vehicles, women and the elderly. #Fact.

Hazard in the road has also been very helpful to me.

That is my feeling. Not sure why I need anything extra unless I am constantly in a unknown area.

Are there still reasons to buy a Garmin or TomTom GPS unit? Is there anything they can do that a GPS app on your phone can't?

The latest TomTom GPS units have:

Lifetime TomTom Maps (US, Canada, Mexico)
Lifetime TomTom Trafffic via Smartphone
Advanced Lane Guidance
MyDrive Cloud App
Updates via Wi-Fi
Compatible with Siri and Google Now™
Hands-free calling
Smartphone Messages

Maaaaaaybe 2 cases:
1. hands-free calling.
2. vacationing around europe/asia/south america via car (and you don't have international data plan to support waze/google maps)

#2 can be bypassed somewhat by entering your route when you have wi-fi. the gps will still work when you're driving.

I haven't tried it in a couple of years, but Waze loves to route me down Ogden Avenue all the way to Kostner from the bowels of DuPage County to go downtown downtown, just to claim to save a minute over the Stevenson or 88/Eisenhower.

I've been following the app since before you were born. Yes, I'm aware. A good product is a good product. There is a huge difference between some innovative business men / programmers and a fascist government. Sons are not responsible for the sins of the father.
