bring the chip kelly offense... im sure NFL D coordinators have forgotten how to stop it so it will work for a few games early in the season like it did during chip's first season

Nagy is the play caller and I doubt he is going to a Chip Kelly offense. Another voice in the room.

You can even use parts of Kelly’s offense. Up tempo stuff has its place you just can’t do it for every play like Kelly wanted too.

They have some brought in some innovative offensive minds into the team.

He has been associated with some great college coaches but this is his first pro stop. That didn't work well for Kelly.

The Chicago Bears have hired former Oregon Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich to be their offensive coordinator, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday.

Helfrich, who was fired by Oregon after the 2016 season, will be part of the Bears' staff under new coach Matt Nagy.

After serving as offensive coordinator under Chip Kelly, Helfrich became head coach of the Ducks in 2013. He went 37-16 over four seasons, leading Oregon to the first College Football Playoff championship game after the 2014 season.

It's a really good hire but they have to be wary of relying on (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky's athleticism. Improvised runs are fine, but I don't think the injury risk is worth it running read options.

Heard that this guy apparently has the same agent as Nagy. And that agent is Trace Armstrong, former Bear. Funny how that works.

Helfrich probably has aspirations to get a head coaching gig again and there's no better way to make yourself a hot commodity than by attaching yourself to rookie QB success story.

Pace actually hiring some good coaches. Alright. Maybe now he can get some talent next without overpaying or drafting 6th rounders in the 2nd round??

Yep, it's all about the players. Mike Martz was a genius and look how that ended up. Which is part of the frustrating thing about this regime change -- Pace is getting kudos when in fact he's a big reason they've blown the last three years.

Helfrich actually has a better resume than Nagy. Lots of people thought he was the next great coach in college football.

If they run read/option five times a game, it's enough to make the defensive players pause.

I think they are going to go with an offensive lineman at #8, or they're going to try to trade to 11-13 and pick up a 3rd and a 5th and shoot for Calvin Ridley or the ND tackle. I don't think they will take Ridley at 8, he's not going to be any damn good if Mitch gets killed for not having a line.

It is so weird that prior to this year as well as last nationally people thought the Bears' O line was a strength. Injuries can just screw you.

Their stregth was considered to be guard-center-guard.

1. Sitton is making $8M last year on the last year of his deal
2. Whitehair regressed last year, probably in part by the lack of continuity
3. Long is an injured disaster, and they can cut him after 2018 with a relatively small cap hit.

And the tackles have never been more than acceptable.

Drafting a LT would go a long way towards solidifying the line. So would drafting the guard from ND and letting him develop for a year while Sitton/Long share RG as they alternate injuries.

Only if you think the college and pros are interchangeable, despite ample evidence to the contrary.

Anyway, Trestman was considered an innovative offensive mind when he came here too. Should be fun!

I'm all aboard the OL train. I wanted a WR at 8 until I saw the WR's drafted last year in round 1. Unless you are getting a consensus stud, don't do it. Get your WR's in free agency or in rounds 3 and 4.

Well, the Bears just hired an offensive coordinator with 0 NFL experience as a player or coach so they seem to think that there is enough similarity between the two.

 What?

Im guessing you meant head coach.

Having success as an NFL offensive coordinator is probably more important than failing at a big time college program in terms of resume.

I don't mean just his head coaching stint but clearly that is part of it. Nagy has been a QB coach since 2013. Helfrich was one from 1998 and a coordinator since 2006 along with being a head coach.

Unless we are saying that college experience has no relevance in the NFL, in which case this is a bad hire since it would be like hiring me for the job of OC, then he has a better resume than Nagy.

To be clear, I think we need to necessarily be talking about NFL resumes here. So you think that someone who has literally never been employed by an NFL team has a better NFL resume than a successful offensive coordinator?

I would say college experience has very little relevance to the NFL. There have been countless Sabans, Petrinos, and Spurriers that reinforce this.

By that line of logic, then this is a terrible hire. Helfrich has 0 NFL experience as a player or coach. How can someone so unqualified get a job like this?

I don't think it's a good hire, but as usual you need to be on one extreme or the other. There's probably a middle ground between "He's unqualified for the job." and "He has a better resume than the head coach." Both are ridiculous statements.

But yeah, I don't think much of the hire. I don't trust college coaches transitioning to the NFL. It rarely works. Nagy should have the most influence on the offense either way though, so maybe it won't be a disaster.
