Turned it on for a bit this morning just as North was about to take a call from Mike Schmidt, his "good buddy" and a "guy he bonded with" at a golf tournament years ago.
North's trying to make all this small talk with him about hitting in Wrigley, etc., etc., etc. like they really are old pals. Finally, Schmidt cuts him off and says, "Look, I know you want to talk baseball, but let me tell you about . . ." and launches into this whole spiel about some boat company he represents and how we're so lucky here because we have Lake Michigan and Chain O'Lakes and we should all go out and buy a boat.

Yep, just one good buddy calling another to chat out of the blue . . .

I didn't hear it and I never listen to the show, but this doesn't surprise me.

The few times I accidently hit the 670 button in the morning, I hear this type of thing from him.

I wouldn't blame North or Schmidt necessarily for this. All shows do this. Have you noticed how many national "guests" on shows are actually there to pitch something? This is the new schtick of PR agencies and the clients they represent. They will provide a "name" to a radio talk show if that show agrees to let the guest do their pitch. It seems there are fewer guests on shows who are not selling something. Competing with Mike North this morning was the Mike and Mike show, who had on Greg Gumbel from CBS to talk about the tourney. Except the tourney wasn't what they talked about. They talked about the Pontiac Most Exciting Moment of the Tourney contest. Pontiac must have been mentioned 50 times in 3 minutes.

I used to notice it when at the Super Bowl when radio shows went there. I guess it is becoming more common every other day of the year to get these celebrities on the air.

I'm sure, like you said Coast, the companies call radio stations across the country offering up Mike Shmidt's and others. Pappy and his crew won't turn down any of these guys. They're always searching for something entertaining to put on the air. They know Pappy and Fred talking doesn't cut it.

That is what Radio Row during Super Bowl week is.
One big advertisement for prostate health, power bars, boat purchasing....

This is happening pretty much everyday now

Yesterday it was Franco Harris pimping some kind of vitamin enhanced donuts (wtf?)

Today Jim Thome is on, and even he is talking about some One A Day vitamins

When John Belushi ran the decathalon in 1976, he was pimping "Little Chocolate Donuts." These might be the same ones.
