I almost never make a point of reading him, but often do when someone tells me about his column.

Ironically, he is what Mike North might have been if he stayed in school and learned how to read and write.

I might read a half dozen of his columns a year. Mostly after someone links them here. I have no recollection of anything I've read. So there, that's about how much his schtick affects me. On the other hand, North's show, I listen to daily. Fred needs to be put in the box and asked to do sports, news, weather, and traffic. Jen needs to be put behind the glass with the boys. Bernstein - to drive North's show. Goff - TB's new partner. Muggy and Huggy - 4 hours. Murph - after 6. Drinky and Grobber - overnights

Mariotti is not "necessary" any more than comparable blowhards like O'Reilly are necessary. He degrades this city's public discourse on sports. Most cities do just fine without having an attack journalist like him in their media. And we would be just fine and be just as informed, if not moreso, with someone else in the role of argumentative columnist.

He uses a lot of newsprint to level personal attacks on people (Reinsdorf, Ozzie, Tribune managers, etc.). Most media don't give their columnists such a license.
