What is confusing? If you take the top 100 rated songs of the past 50 years, almost all of them have vocals on them. I see no shame in ONLY being able to sing well enough to win a Grammy.

Terrible thought. There are plenty of people who have success in the music industry that do not play or sing a lick. Sound engineers, producers, tour managers, promoters, etc. You think guys like Peter Grant or Eddie Kramer felt "hollow" because all they did was help artists like Led-Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix tour and record?

I mean George Martin was referred to as the 'Fifth Beatle', and that wasn't because he sang on Let it Be or played guitar on the White Album.

yeah i have no issue with it
just when i saw your comment it was like you were tossing off entire genres like jazz. but i get that it's in the context of a Grammy discussion so we're only talking about "top 100 rated songs" or whatever

Jazz would be another exception, though many jazz songs have vocals too.

I think even a top 100 list made by you would have almost all of them with vocals. Does pitchfork even have bands that don't sing?

Out of all the winners of the musical awards, how many actually play a musical instrument?

Did Sinatra play anything?

I don't think so but what's your point?

I would think it would feel like hollow success to be in the music industry without the ability to produce anything but vocals.

Why? Outside of classical music, nearly every great song has vocals.

enlightening

I always wondered what that non instrumental sound was coming out of my speakers

what ?

I consider writing one's own music to be pivotal as well to be considered among the elite artists.

I outgrew the primacy of 1970s rock after high school. There's great music in every year and lots of crap. You can hear a lot of the old crap on 87.7.
