You are right. I was told when I moved into Edgewater that if I was low on cash to head for the Anvil and have a drink bought for me for a change. I appreciated the advice but I would feel bad conning someone into thinking I was gay.

Where you trying the (somewhat overpriced) cocktails at Revival? Or the pizza at Gino's North (excellent back bar BTW).

We should grab a beer at the Sov JORR

I was at Revival. I just had my go to Johnnie Black & soda. My wife had some specialty Manhattan that was on the cocktail menu.

I miss the old Gino's North sign. The Pumping Company used to be my Wednesday night spot for quarter beers. I was the last one in my crew to turn 21 and I could still get in there. Char-Lar was a four o'clock stop in those days. Not many late night places left. Chaser's and Fiddler's Green on Devon are long gone too.

I would totally meet you at the Sov for a few.

RIP pumping company. I'm still hoping they might reopen some day. Trivia there was great

I had an apartment at The Sovereign my junior year of college ('90). At that time there was a mixture of students, Jesuits, nuns, and "regular" people. Is it still like that?

IIRC there was an Italian (I think...) restaurant in there at the time that I don't recall ever being busy. I can picture it but can't remember the name. The building manager's (or whatever his title was -- he had an office on the first floor) name was Mr. Armetta.

The Sovreign apartment building is still there. The first floor is a Thai restaurant and there is a fitness club as well.

The Sovreign we are talking about is on Broadway. It's a legit dive but in a good way.

Ah, gotcha.

I thought they turned the restaurant into a bar or you were talking about a bar in the restaurant.

I’m assuming Monks isn’t the place in the Dells.
I always kind of saw you as a patron of Tom’s Place in Lemont (Blatz on tap).

My cousin’s kids do Tom’s and Blatz. I was partial to a Nick’s Tavern burger.

I watched Ireland beat Italy in the World Cup there in '94.....the South Side Vaughn's was nice, but with a clientele that became psycho.

Was in Sovereign with my uncle before I even reached double digits. Was over there recently. Even the guy in the frame shop at Broadway and Granville was still there.

Yeah Fogcutter was quite something. Went there a bit in the mid 90s, I will probably develop lung cancer from the 2nd hand smoke I breathed in there.
My parents would actually buy carryout ribs for family dinners from there every couple of months. I would never have wanted to see the kitchen area, but
the food was excellent. Is it actually still standing?

These are the only bars mentioned here and not around Rush/Division I've even heard of.

And House of Tiki really turned into a dive many nights.

Tiki was an awesome, awesome place--totally great vibe. A lot of times I dropped in, I was the only or one of a few white guys in the place. The older regulars in there would often fuck with me in a funny way, and that usually led to great conversations and some crazy late-night drinking, always capped off with a run to Harold's!

It was a place for great, if not odd conversations. The sight of the IC/Metra parking lot there now still makes me ill. But toward the end, there were way too many early 20 somethings that only wanted to get absolutely blotto. And start ruckus.

Yep. The Tiki Lounge was the joint. Did change towards the end and i was in there with the 20 something crowd you're referencing Reader.

That damn Tiki Lounge used to serve the strongest Long Islands known to mankind. There would be 12 different shots mixed in as I recall. Allegedly illegal for them to serve more than one. I've left out of there blasted on more than one occasion.

I've knocked at least a couple back in every one of those places. I'm sure it was a simple oversight that Augenblick did not make the Late Great list.

And yeah, those were rocket fuel :drunken:

I've done a few of those spots. I remember when the Stones decided to do an impromptu show at the Double Door the night before they were to perform at Soldiers Field.

Got arrested one night making a Bogus right turn on a red light on Wellington while on my way to Hip Hop Mondays at the Elbo Room back in the day. I think they would have let me slide but the chick that I had with me started going off on the damn police. Played the racial card and I don't think she knew that I was driving with Bogus Insurance. Booked me up at the Belmont/Western station

Reggie's yeah and if By Beetle You're talking Black Beetle on Chicago Ave Yep. Think I've been in Metro too.

Black Beetle used to make their own Lager as I remember. That was my Tuesday night spot back in the day.

SUBT yep also.

Never got out of the neighborhood much, but these were the South Side places we went a lot when we were younger. I haven't spent any real significant time in a bar outside after a game in 7 or 8 years.
