Right and I totally agree. I said "I" didn't care much because I'm a huge NBA fan. I can see how it irked people but think this site way overexaggerated how much of it there was particularly in light of who will be replacing him.

Basically: you can't harp of Goff for doing something that was bad business when the guy effectively replacing him is prone to waste time talking about things that are actually less popular.

No, you're wrong, treating the Blackhawks as anything more than a retarded step-brother means we demand five hours of Chicago afternoon drive devoted to the Buffalo Sabres

I wasn't in love with Goff but I felt over the last few weeks they had found a nice balance on the show. I think there's far too much time given to people on the text line and the show for awhile felt less fun. The NBA discussion didn't bother me and seems way overblown on this site. Still, there were issues but to replace him or anyone on the station with Dan fucking McNeil is silly. He's been unreliable time and time again and you give him ANOTHER chance?!

There is almost ZERO interest in the NBA outside of the Bulls in the Chicago market.

I'll sure be checking in now that there will be a return to such iconic references like "North Dallas Forty" "Slap Shot" "Point Spreads" "Ron Jeremy" "Rolling Stones" and "Personal disinterest". Interest in the show is sure to be spiked now that hot button issues such as these are going to be addressed.

Well, those things have gotten ratings when Mac has employed them. I dont know what to tell ya.

Point spreads are a good topic for sports radio though.

first off, it's silly to say there's no interest in national NBA. Lebron love, maybe not so much.

I like Jason. I met Jason. He's good people. He's a good third voice in a three man weave. He's way too excitable in a two man booth. I've said for a couple weeks Dan has been shooting him daggers whenever he talks over a Dan point, a Dan read, a Dan "moment". He's not doing it on purpose...he just doesn't know when to let the show have some "air".

The slot will be better with the combos people have listed in this thread. Maybe Jason gets an invite back to his old role, a role he was very very good at-Dan's foil, drop player, alternative voice from the two hosts. Maybe he just goes elsewhere. It's too bad...he could have been good.

The show's foibles are well known. I think Bernsie will be better with a better partner. I'm excited about this.

Not nearly as much.

Goff and Bernstein spent entire segments on the NBA unrelated to the Bulls. Has Mac ever done that? ever? I dont think so.

Saying he put $100 on the Devils and talking about the game for 30 seconds is not equal to what Goff and Bernstein did.

Sure, people who work for Deadspin and The Ringer love to write "What Liking Russell Westbrook Means To Race Relations In America," but are they Score listeners?

Agree with everything said here. I don't want to get it twisted that I'm a huge Goff supporter or fan, I did not love the show even with them talking about things relevant to my interests. I'm excited to see what's next... with that said, I think re-hiring Danny Mac is a monumentally stupid decision.

Agreed, I'd rather listen to a discussion of point spreads than fantasy football talk.

Does anyone think Goff hareliping Paxson in that interview a few weeks ago had anything to do with this?

No, I think it was the fact that afternoon ratings went into freefall without day baseball to prop them up.

Nobody is going to be talking about the Blackhawks. Not much to say about them.

I hope Mac lays off the music stuff this time.

I wonder whether Grote fits into this somehow and if it was known during the prior change with Zaidman.

But the car accident was 2012 and they won two championships after that. And you're making an argument no one's making. No one is asking for out-of-town NHL talk. That would be insane! But it's wrong to swear up and down that no one cares about the Blackhawks while the city is in the middle of a torrid love affair with the Bulls. The Blackhawks were getting better ratings and the Bulls haven't done shit since Rose went down. There was a time when no one cared about the Hawks and for good reason. That time is over, whether Jason wanted to admit it or not.

I hadn't realized it was that long ago. My mistake. And I didn't say that no one cares about the Hawks, hell even I still do, but when the talk was largely being driven by Bernstein on his knee pads between crap about his son's midget team, even you have to admit it was a problem. Or that when it became a never ending discussion of the detailed problems of the salary cap woes, it becomes ptfb radio.

Right. A lot of it is only ostensibly basketball writing/talk. It's using the NBA to push a political agenda. There is a market among sports fans for a discussion of a LeBron no-look pass. A market for think pieces positioning LeBron as some sort of modern day Alexander the Great, probably not as much.

for me this show whether its good or its not, took itself too seriously. when you take yourself too seriously yet have bad numbers then then you go bye bye.

for me this show was bad because it took away the fun stuff. even if the fun stuff is bad, its what draws people to turn it on. oh wyc is on at 5. people listen. it doesn't matter.

remember, applebees, olive garden, and tgifridays have 2 hour waits on friday nights. but they got their shticks. 1 dollar Margs, free breadsticks, all you can eat apps, whatever. its not particularly great food but it gets numbers.

goofy shit gets numbers and NPR sports radio doesn't.

There is interest in it. That's why there are national shows. Ironically though, the national radio show I like the most and better than anything in Chicago doesn't talk NBA as much as they did.

Local sports radio should be about local sports. Anyone who does anything else is doomed to fail.

I can't stand GarPax, but that seems unlikely especially given that team's longer term irrelevance.

COF i think that you just hit on one of the key things. Goff's and Bernstein's NBA talk was in essence nothing more than a referendum on Lebron James. Their NBA discussions are weak. I love the NBA but I learned a long time ago that Goff wouldn't be a go to guy for me. He wasn't particularly knowledgable and his information tended to be that of the fake insider. Over the top and repetitive love of Lebron while screwing the rest of the league. Spiegel was more knowledgable in my opinion then either he or Bernstein and he's more of a baseball guy.

They kind of took the "Ryan Pace" approach to the show...they killed a bunch of long time signature "bits"..but they never replaced them with anything 'worthwhile'. Killing WYC was a mistake....that show had already transcended multiple host(s) so in spirit, they should have kept it running.

I'd be less worried about Mac devoting time to national NHL talk than I would be about him indulging in the same boring classic rock talk that's increasingly permeated his last several stints. I'd take irrelevant national talk about both the NHL and NBA over that crap.

Spiegel is just more knowledgeable in general as he cares about his job and performs actual show prep. B&G carried on the B&B tradition of no pre-show meetings.

Inherently, the problem with their SJW radio is that it was one sided. They wouldn't even acknowledge that reasonable people could disagree. Take the NFL players kneeling during the anthem. If you felt that was a bad move, they would just keep declaring that the kneeling was about equality. Well what about the folks that support equality but feel it's a bad forum to break the tradition of standing for the anthem? On every issue, they were so definitive that folks coudln't even have a reasonable discussion. And when "fine don't listen" is your stock response, well don't be surprised when people stop listening.

So what you end up doing is the Fox News/MSNBC demographic split. You piss off half the available audience right off the bat. And for sports talk radio, the market is quite limited to men of a certain age. So you are splitting up an already small demo.

Its a good partnership, and even a bad Bulls team is more popular than the Blackhawks, plus the arrow should be pointing up.

first off, it's silly to say there's no interest in national NBA. Lebron love, maybe not so much.
There is interest in it. That's why there are national shows. Ironically though, the national radio show I like the most and better than anything in Chicago doesn't talk NBA as much as they did.

Local sports radio should be about local sports. Anyone who does anything else is doomed to fail.

Rick you said it best when you said they did a show they wanted to hear and not what the masses wanted to listen to. Not much more to say really. They felt they were big enough and immune from blow back that they could so whatever. They were wrong. Quite honestly, I am surprised Dan was not beaten down years ago with the Penn State thing. Not because he was wrong but because it didn't fit in Chicago all the damn time. At that point he had more capital I guess?
